How to Clean Your Stylus—Keep Your Turntable in Top Condition

Jul 29, 2025

While the world outside keeps turning, only the sound remains inside. Between the needle and the groove lies a small eternity—and that’s exactly where Klangheimat comes in. Welcome to a new chapter on the art of needle cleaning.

Why Needle Care Is Crucial

It’s barely bigger than an insect’s wing, yet it determines the life and death of the sound: the turntable needle. What many people forget: As it traces the groove, the stylus moves through microscopic channels filled with dust, skin particles, plasticizers, dirt, and soot. And just like a shoe sole on pebbles, the delicate little diamond wears down—or becomes clogged.

The result: The sound becomes muffled, the dynamics diminish, and in the worst case, the records can even be damaged. A dirty stylus acts like sandpaper on the vinyl groove. If you don’t take action here, you’re cutting corners in the wrong place.

How often should you clean it?

Every 1–2 LPs = Dry cleaning (e.g., with a stylus brush)
Every 5–10 LPs = Thorough cleaning (e.g., with a wet cleaner)

This is especially important if you play used records or don’t use a record cleaner. Visible dust strands on the stylus are always a warning sign.

What methods are there?

1. Dry brushing

A classic method: Gently brush the tip of the stylus from back to front using a special carbon-fiber needle brush or bristle brush. Always use a steady hand; do not apply sideways pressure.

2. Wet cleaning with cleaning fluid

One drop on the brush is enough. Never apply it directly to the stylus! The fluid also removes oily or sticky residue that dry brushing doesn’t pick up.

3. Gel or polymer pads

Popular: so-called “Tackies” or needle-cleaning gel pads. Gently lower the needle onto the slightly sticky surface, which essentially “pulls off” the particles.

4. Ultrasound (for professionals)

There are even needle cleaners with mini ultrasonic technology. Very effective, but expensive and more suitable for studio use.

What to Avoid

  • Cleaning with alcohol, rubbing alcohol, or glass cleaner
  • Side-to-side or circular rubbing
  • Cotton swabs, microfiber cloths, or hard brushes
  • Constant rubbing: less is more

A stylus is more delicate than it looks. If you treat it like a paintbrush, you risk damaging the delicate suspension or getting dirt on the cantilever.

Our recommendation

If you love your records, you should love your stylus, too. After all, a clean diamond not only sounds better—it also lasts longer. We recommend, for example, the Flux Hifi Sonic or the Simply Analog Stylus Cleaning Kit —depending on your budget and preference.

At the End of the Groove

What’s often dismissed as a minor detail is actually key to achieving perfect sound. Needle care isn’t rocket science—it’s a habit, just like cleaning your glasses or brushing your teeth. The only difference is that music is at stake here.

Treat yourself to the sound your records deserve. And give your stylus a little love.
