Vinyl record storage done properly: two new arrivals from clearaudio
A handcrafted archive box in FSC-certified timber and antistatic inner sleeves in acid-free polypropylene – clearaudio extends its accessory range exactly where record collections suffer most: on the shelf.
L et us do the arithmetic. A record you play twice a month spends roughly 90 minutes a year on the platter. The remaining 8,670 hours it spends on the shelf. Whenever we talk about sound quality, we talk about cartridges, phono stages and turntables – and almost never about the conditions in which the medium spends the overwhelming majority of its life. Yet that is precisely where it is decided whether an LP will still sound the way it does today in twenty years’ time.
This autumn the Erlangen-based manufacturer clearaudio has introduced two products that close exactly that gap: the Groove Archive Box, a handcrafted archive box made in Germany, and the 12" Anti-Static Record Inner Sleeves in high-density polypropylene. Both are now available from us.
Anyone who has kept a collection in wine crates or budget shelving knows the side effects: sagging shelves, warped sleeves, records leaning sideways under their own weight. The Groove Archive Box tackles the problem from the material side. It is made in Germany from locally sourced, FSC-certified timber and stained a deep mahogany red – a finish that reads as furniture in a living room rather than as an accessory.
More interesting than the finish, though, is what happens inside. Three compartments and two removable dividers can be combined freely – so you can sort by genre, label or listening frequency instead of submitting to a fixed grid. Capacity is 50 standard LPs or 25 double albums, which deliberately places it in the territory of a curated selection rather than a complete archive.
And that is where the real idea lies: the box is conceived as a module. Up to four units can be stacked, arranged side by side or wall-mounted. Start small, grow later. The wall mounting is more than a design flourish, too – mounted clear of the floor, the box stays free of structure-borne vibration, which is a perfectly serious argument in listening rooms with loudspeakers that move real air at low frequencies.

A collection grows. Its storage ought to be able to grow with it – without starting over three times.
KlangheimatThe original paper inner sleeve is the most underestimated enemy of any record. Paper abrades. Paper sheds fibres. Paper builds up a static charge and then attracts precisely the dust you have just removed with a carbon-fibre brush. Anyone who has pulled a freshly cleaned LP out of an old paper sleeve and held it up to raking light knows the feeling.
The new clearaudio 12" Anti-Static Record Inner Sleeves are made from high-density, acid-free polypropylene. Acid-free is not a marketing label here but a basic archival requirement: acidic materials release compounds over the years that attack both vinyl and printed artwork. The polypropylene also substantially reduces electrostatic charging – and with it the dust attraction that ultimately shows up as crackle from the groove floor.
The second effect is the one you notice immediately: the extremely smooth surface lets the LP glide out of the sleeve with almost no resistance. No tugging, no catching the playing surface on the sleeve edge, no abrasion. Micro-scratches arise predominantly during handling – not during playback. A sleeve that takes the strain out of removal therefore protects the record exactly where it is most vulnerable.
The fit has been solved sensibly, too: the sleeves suit standard LP jackets and also slide over the original paper inner sleeve. Collectors who refuse to discard the original for the sake of completeness are not forced to choose. One pack contains 50 sleeves (item no. AC178, RRP €39) – enough for an entire shelf.
Electrostatic charging arises from friction between two dissimilar materials – with vinyl, classically when the record is drawn out of its paper sleeve. The charged surface then attracts airborne dust particles and holds on to them. Antistatic materials such as high-density polypropylene produce considerably less charge separation on contact with PVC. The result: less dust in the groove, fewer impulsive noise artefacts, less cleaning.
clearaudio has been based in Erlangen since 1978 and is one of very few manufacturers producing turntables, tonearms and cartridges entirely in Germany. The accessory range follows the same logic: not bought-in mass-market goods, but products consistent with that depth of manufacture. The Groove Archive Box, with its locally sourced FSC timber, is a characteristic example.

Both new arrivals available now from Klangheimat.
On the price list of a well-assembled system, these two products sit right at the bottom. In terms of their effect on what comes out of the loudspeakers ten years from now, they sit surprisingly near the top. A new cartridge improves playback from today onwards. A clean, mechanically unstressed, unwarped record improves playback from today onwards – and holds that advantage for the entire life of the collection.
Our recommendation: begin with the inner sleeves. Fifty of them, one unhurried hour at the kitchen table, and a shelf is permanently taken care of. The Groove Archive Box is the handsomer but also the larger decision – and one that, thanks to its modular concept, is free to grow later.
