Why the factory inner sleeve of every freshly washed record is the worst thing that can happen to it - and how six layers of HDPE and paper solve this problem once and for all.

Anyone whowashes their records - whether with a record washing machine, ultrasound or by hand - is doing everything right. If you then put the freshly cleaned LP back into the original factory inner sleeve, you will undo half of this work. Most factory inner sleeves are made of simple, untreated paper: it scratches microscopically fine grooves into the vinyl surface when it is inserted and removed, becomes electrostatically charged and attracts the very dust that you have just laboriously removed. This dust settles in the grooves and can be heard as crackling and distortion the next time the record is played.

This is not a law of nature, but a solvable problem. Sieveking Sound from Bremen - one of the most renowned German companies for vinyl accessories - has developed the Super Premium Inner Sleeves, an inner sleeve that does not compromise on any of these points. Six layers, thoughtfully designed for record collectors who want to make a real difference.

The invisible main problem
Electrostatic: the enemy on the shelf

Electrostatic charge is the most underestimated problem in vinyl storage. When a record is pulled out of a conventional paper sleeve, friction creates an electrostatic charge on the vinyl surface. This charge acts like a magnet on the finest dust particles - both from the air and directly from the inner wall of the sleeve itself. The result: the freshly cleaned record is contaminated again as soon as it is laid down.

High-density polyethylene - HDPE for short - behaves fundamentally differently to paper in this respect. HDPE is naturally antistatic, without additives or coatings that degrade over time. There is no electrostatic charge when the sheet is pulled out. No newly attracted dust, no new dirt in the grooves. The cleaned sheet remains clean.

Knowledge at a glance: What is HDPE?

HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is a thermoplastic with a particularly dense molecular structure. Unlike PVC or other film plastics, HDPE does not contain any plasticizers (phthalates), which can evaporate from the material and migrate to adjacent surfaces. For vinyl storage, this means: no chemical reactions with the panel surface, no clouding, no stickiness - even after decades.

If you wash your records and then put them back in a paper sleeve, you've done half the work for nothing.

Construction in detail
Six layers, one principle

The decisive difference between the Sieveking Sound Super Premium Inner Sleeves lies in the layer structure: Two outer layers of HDPE enclose a middle layer of robust paper - on both sides, symmetrically, six layers in total. This structure is no coincidence, but the result of a clear functional logic.

The HDPE outer layers provide contact with the vinyl surface. They are antistatic, scratch-resistant and plasticizer-free - the LP never touches raw paper, which could sand or leave fibres behind. The paper in the middle fulfills a mechanical function: it gives the sleeve the necessary rigidity so that it does not fold up or jam during insertion. Who hasn't experienced this: a foil sleeve that is too soft, crumples up when inserted into a tight cover and then jams. The paper prevents exactly that - and at the same time enables the characteristic label cut-out.

The label cut-out is a small detail with great everyday benefits: The punched-out area allows the record's label to be seen even before it is pulled out. A-side or B-side - without unnecessary handling, without even having to touch the record. For anyone who regularly leafs through their collection, this noticeably reduces the number of handling operations per session.

Slim Cover & practice
Suitable for slim covers: no effort, no jamming

Anyone with a large collection will be familiar with the problem: particularly slim covers - typical for older pressings from the 1960s and 1970s, but also for some new pressings - simply do not allow thicker inner sleeves to be inserted. Too much resistance when inserting, the cover bends, in the worst case the seam tears. Reaching for the thinnest available foil sleeve is then often the only way out - at the expense of protection.

The Super Premium Inner Sleeves are dimensioned in such a way that they can be inserted into particularly tight covers without any effort. Once again, the paper in the construction plays a central role: it prevents the sleeve from deforming or wedging uncontrollably during insertion. The sleeve retains its shape, slides in cleanly and can be removed just as easily. No jamming, no tearing of the cover.

Long-term storage & plasticizer
Plasticizer-free: What this means for your collection

When it comes to the long-term storage of records, the issue of plasticizers is not academic, but practically relevant. Many inexpensive plastic sleeves - including those marketed as "protective sleeves" - are made of PVC or other plastics that contain plasticizers (phthalates). These compounds are not firmly bound in the material, but migrate slowly out of the film. On prolonged contact with the vinyl surface, they can lead to clouding, stickiness or chemical changes to the sheet surface - gradually, over years or decades.

HDPE does not contain any plasticizers. The molecular structure of the material is inherently stable - no additives that could evaporate or migrate. The Super Premium Inner Sleeves are therefore not only optimized for everyday use, but are also designed for archiving collections that are to be preserved for generations. Investing in high-quality inner sleeves today not only protects your records from the next play, but also from the ravages of time.

Practical tip: The right care system

The Super Premium Inner Sleeves achieve their maximum effect in combination with thorough record cleaning. First wash your LP with a record washing machine or in an ultrasonic bath, dry it completely and then place it in the new inner sleeve. Only this procedure completes the care cycle: Cleanly cleaned, permanently clean storage.

AFTERNOON
Reverberation: Small sleeve, big difference

Sieveking Sound Super Premium Inner Sleeves are one of those products that, looking back, you won't want to be without. The investment is manageable - a pack of 50 covers a large part of any collection - but the benefits are lasting and measurable: cleaner records, less crackling during playback, a clearer conscience during storage. Once you know what a bad inner sleeve can do, you'll never go back.

With this inner sleeve, Sieveking Sound has created a product that makes no compromises: antistatic thanks to HDPE, plasticizer-free for long-term storage, dimensionally stable thanks to the paper, suitable for slim covers thanks to the precise dimensions, convenient thanks to the label cut-out. Five solid arguments in a single sleeve. From collectors for collectors - and it shows.
