The 1-step procedure explained

Dec 8, 2024

The 1-step production process for vinyl records is a highly developed technique that requires fewer production steps than the conventional multi-step process (e.g. the 3-step process). It is mainly used for audiophile records and is considered one of the best methods to ensure maximum sound quality. Here is a detailed explanation:

1-Step process in detail

1. mastering and cutting the lacquer master

  • The process begins with the creation of the lacquer master (also called "lacquer film"), a thin aluminum plate coated with nitrocellulose.
  • The audio source (e.g. analog tape or digital file) is cut onto the lacquer foil during the mastering process. This is done using a cutting stylus (lathes), which cuts the audio data directly into the surface in the form of grooves.
  • This step requires the utmost precision, as any deviation could affect the sound quality.

2. creation of the "father" metal master

  • The lacquer master is electroplated immediately after cutting, a process in which a thin layer of metal (usually nickel) is applied to the surface.
  • This metal layer is peeled off the lacquer master, creating a metal negative, also known as a "father".
  • The "father" contains the grooves as elevations (negative to the original image) and is used directly for pressing.

3. elimination of the intermediate steps

  • In the conventional process (e.g. 3-step), the "father" would be used to produce a "mother" (a metal positive). The "mother" in turn is used to produce stamper (pressing matrices), which are then used for pressing records.
  • In the 1-step process, this intermediate step is omitted: the "father" is used directly as a stamper. This means that there is no "mother" or additional prints between the lacquer master and the record.

4. pressing of the records

  • With the "father" as a stamper, the records are pressed directly. As the "father" can only withstand a limited number of pressings (usually 500-1,000), the number of records produced is strictly limited.
  • The vinyl is formed in the pressing machines with enormous pressure and heat, whereby the grooves of the "father" are transferred directly into the vinyl.

Advantages of the 1-step process

  1. Less loss of sound quality:

    • As the "father" is used directly, there are fewer copying steps between the original recording (the lacquer master) and the finished record. This minimizes surface defects and deviations that could occur with additional intermediate steps.

    • The sound is therefore closer to the original and offers exceptional detail and dynamics.
  2. Greater precision:

    • The groove structure is transferred from the lacquer master with minimal changes, resulting in a more direct and authentic sound.
  3. Limited editions and exclusivity:

    • As the "father" can only be used for a limited number of records, these editions are extremely limited. Every record produced is practically a collector's item.
  4. Less surface noise:

    • The 1-step process reduces surface artifacts and noise as the plating process is only carried out once.

Disadvantages of the 1-step process

  1. Higher production costs:

    • The process is more expensive as the "father" has to be replaced after a few hundred pressings and there is no way to duplicate it with a "mother".
    • This leads to higher final prices for the records.
  2. Strictly limited production:

    • Since the "father" is used directly, the maximum production number is limited. Collectors and audiophiles compete for these limited copies.
  3. Elaborate production:

    • The entire process requires the utmost precision, both when cutting the lacquer master and during electroplating.

Comparison with the 3-step process

Feature 1-step process 3-step process
Steps 2 (lacquer master → father → vinyl) 4 (lacquer master → father → mother → stamper → vinyl)
Sound quality Very high, minimal loss Slightly lower, due to more copying steps
Number of pressings Limited (approx. 500-1,000) Higher (up to 10,000 or more)
Costs High Low
Availability Exclusive, limited Larger series possible

The 1-step production process is ideal for audiophile records where maximum fidelity and exclusivity are paramount. Although it is more complex and expensive, it delivers an incomparable listening experience and is particularly popular with collectors and sound purists. It is the perfect choice for limited high-end releases where quality is more important than quantity.
