Why CD care matters
A CD looks robust, but it is only partly so. The music sits in a wafer-thin reflective layer directly beneath the printed top side – protected only by a thin coat of lacquer. Scratches and fingerprints on the playing side impair readability, while pressure or UV light on the top side can damage the reflective layer itself. Good CD accessories address both: sleeves prevent mechanical damage, cleaners and anti-static products keep the disc clean, and scratch removers help when the damage is already done.
Clean, scratch-free discs play reliably, without dropouts.
A protected reflective layer, less stress from light and pressure.
Digipaks, booklets and obi strips stay like new.
Well-packed discs make it easy to keep your collection in order.

How to clean & protect CDs properly
Follow these rules to handle your discs gently:
- —Hold by the edge: Only hold discs by the edge and the centre hole – this keeps both the playing side and the top side free of fingerprints.
- —Wipe from the centre outwards: Always clean in straight lines from the centre to the edge, never in circles. Circular marks run along the data track and are harder for error correction to compensate.
- —The right products: A microfibre cloth with a dedicated CD cleaner or distilled water. Acetone, glass cleaner and other solvents can attack the lacquer.
- —Use anti-static: Anti-static cloths and sprays reduce the charge – the disc attracts less dust and needs cleaning less often.
- —Well packed: Put digipaks and card sleeves in suitable protective sleeves. Acid-free films prevent cover and booklet from yellowing over the years.
Which sleeve for which format?
The right protective sleeve depends on the packaging, not the disc format:
| Format | Typical packaging | Suitable sleeve | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio CD | Jewel case or digipak | Standard CD protective sleeve | The all-rounder for most collections |
| SACD & HDCD | Usually jewel case | Standard CD protective sleeve | Care as for a CD, no special treatment needed |
| XRCD & K2HD | High-quality digipaks | Slightly larger digipak sleeve | Protect elaborate packaging from pressure |
| Mini-LP CD | Cardboard mini-LP with obi | Special mini-LP sleeve | Accommodate the obi strip precisely |
| Box sets | Slipcase or box | Custom-size sleeve or slipcase | Against pressure and knocks on the edges |
Our audiophile CDs – from gold CD to XRCD and SACD – deserve exactly this kind of protection.
Scratches, disc rot & storage
Scratches on the playing side
Superficial scratches on the shiny underside are often compensated by error correction or can be removed with scratch-remover polish. The polish removes a minimal amount of polycarbonate and levels out shallow scratches – there is enough material, as the transparent layer makes up almost the entire 1.2 mm thickness of the disc.
Damage on the top side
Scratches on the printed side are far more critical: this is where the reflective layer sits directly beneath the lacquer. Damage is usually irreparable – so never put CDs down top side down and do not write on them.
Preventing disc rot
Disc rot refers to the gradual oxidation of the reflective layer, mainly in older or poorly pressed CDs. You can prevent it with dry, cool and dark storage at the most constant humidity possible. You will find storage tips under storage & organisation.

Frequently asked questions about CD sleeves & CD accessories
What is the best way to clean CDs?
Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth in straight lines from the centre outwards, never in circles. If needed, use a dedicated CD cleaner or distilled water. Acetone, glass cleaner and other solvents are off limits, as they can attack the protective lacquer.
Which CD sleeve fits which packaging?
Standard jewel cases (approx. 142 × 125 mm) fit into normal CD protective sleeves. Digipaks and card sleeves need slightly larger sleeves that hold the folding cover without squeezing it. Mini-LP CDs need special sleeves for the obi strip, box sets custom-size sleeves or slipcases.
Does a CD still work after a scratch?
That depends on where the scratch is and how deep it goes. Error correction often compensates light scratches on the playing side, or they can be polished out. Scratches on the printed top side are more critical because the reflective layer is located there – they are usually irreparable.
What is disc rot and how do I prevent it?
Disc rot is the oxidation of the reflective layer, mainly in older or poorly manufactured CDs. It shows up as read errors and discolouration. Dry, cool and dark storage at stable humidity prevents it; modern pressings are rarely affected.
Do SACDs and XRCDs need special accessories?
Not for cleaning and protection – they are treated like normal CDs. The packaging matters more: XRCDs often come in elaborate digipaks that deserve a suitable, high-quality protective sleeve.
How do I protect Japanese mini-LP CDs?
With special sleeves that hold the obi strip precisely. Remove or fold the obi as rarely as possible and store the editions upright with light lateral support so that the cardboard packaging does not deform.
Does anti-static spray really help?
Yes, as a care measure: it reduces static charge, so the disc attracts less dust and needs cleaning less often. It has no measurable effect on sound – the benefit lies in protecting the surface.
How much space does a CD collection need?
As a rule of thumb, 100 jewel cases need about one metre of shelf width. CD compartments are typically around 14 × 14 cm and combine well with LP shelves. You will find suitable solutions under storage & organisation.
