George Cardas began his career as a racing engineer - and discovered that the Golden Section, which he used for engine control and exhaust systems to control resonances, could be applied just as precisely to conductor geometries. In 1987, he founded Cardas Audio in Bandon, Oregon, and was awarded two US patents for his patented Golden Section Stranding technology. The principle: the individual strands of a conductor are scaled in geometric steps according to the golden section (1 : 1.618) - no common harmonic resonance point, no crosstalk, no mutual cancellation. The result is not an ordinary cable conductor, but an inherently resonance-quiet transmission medium. The HSL PCC ER headshell leads bring this technology to the most sensitive connection point in the entire analog system: between the pickup and the headshell.
The 33 AWG Litz cable is made of ultra-pure grade 1 copper (99.9999% oxygen-free), which is drawn through diamond dies in a hydrogen reduction atmosphere process - a process that eliminates surface impurities and ensures the homogeneity of the conductor at a level that is crucial for the transmission of the smallest pickup signals in the microvolt range. Each individual strand carries a urethane varnish coating (SPN Clear Coat) that prevents oxidation and eliminates crosstalk between the conductors. Terminated by hand in Bandon, Oregon with PCC ER Clips, the most sophisticated pickup terminals Cardas manufactures.

The PCC ER cartridge clips
The PCC ER cartridge clips are the heart of these headshell leads - and the most technically complex part of the entire product. They consist of an euteктic, non-magnetic brass block (billet brass), which does not produce any magnetic field distortion in the immediate area of the pickup generator - a detail that is hardly taken into account with cheaper tempered clips, but which has sonic consequences. The contact surface has a layer of rhodium over silver: rhodium is one of the hardest and most corrosion-resistant precious metals and does not form oxide layers during long-term use, which would increase the contact resistance. The clamping mechanism is based on a beryllium copper spring - a material that is known for its exceptional spring tension and long-term stability and ensures permanent, secure contact with the pickup pins without damaging them.
The clips fit the most common pickup pins in the standard diameters of 1.0 mm and 1.2 mm - and therefore almost every pickup on the market. The conductor length of 38 mm (1.5 inches) corresponds to the industry standard for headshell leads and can be easily installed in all common tonearms with interchangeable headshells.
Why this connection makes all the difference
The signal that a pickup delivers is in the range of a few millivolts - even in the microvolt range for low-output MC systems. No other cable in the signal chain carries such a sensitive signal over such a short distance with so many potential sources of interference. Oxidized contacts, magnetic clamping materials, resonance-prone conductor geometries and poor cable insulation add up at this point to a noise floor that no phono preamplifier in the world can undo. The Cardas HSL PCC ER Leads address each of these issues: ultra-pure, lacquered Litz copper with no oxidation potential, a low-resonance conductor geometry based on the golden ratio, non-magnetic contact bodies and a rhodium-over-silver coating that still has the same contact resistance after years as it did on the first day.
