Hi-fi circuit breakers – more than just protection
Sound tuning where the power enters the house.
Standard circuit breakers in the consumer unit are designed for safety, not for sound quality. Audiophile circuit breakers offer the same protection but rely on high-quality contacts, solid terminals and low-vibration mechanics – for many hi-fi enthusiasts the logical starting point of a holistically optimised power supply.
CONSUMER UNIT
dedicated circuit for the hi-fi system
Advantages of audiophile circuit breakers
Premium contacts
Silver- or rhodium-plated contacts for improved conductivity.
Low vibration
Mechanically damped design for fewer micro-vibrations.
Strong contact
Solid terminals and contacts – stable even in long-term use.
Full protection
The same protective function as a standard circuit breaker.
01
The difference from a standard circuit breaker
Every circuit in the house is protected in the consumer unit by a miniature circuit breaker (MCB). The entire current supplying your hi-fi system flows through it. Standard breakers are mass products: reliable in protection, but optimised for low cost when it comes to contact materials, terminals and mechanics.
Audiophile circuit breakers fulfil the same protective task, but replace simple contact materials and components with solid, sound-oriented solutions. The aim is a low-loss, stable connection at the very point where the power for your system begins its journey.
02
What effects are described?
Sonic differences caused by circuit breakers are hard to measure – what counts is the listening impression. After the swap, hi-fi enthusiasts mainly report these effects. How clear they are depends on the system, the house wiring and your ears.
✓More detail & dynamics
Fine details and transients are often described as clearer and livelier.
✓Calmer background
Many listeners report less “grey veil” and a blacker background.
✓Depth & stage
For many listeners, instruments are placed more precisely in space and the stage appears deeper.
03
Who is a hi-fi circuit breaker worthwhile for?
Hi-fi enthusiasts with a dedicated circuit
If your system runs on a separate circuit, you can upgrade its breaker specifically.
Holistic sound tuners
From the mains connection to the power amp – the breaker is the first link in the power chain.
Technically minded listeners
For anyone who pays attention to power quality and optimises their system’s supply step by step.

Installation & compatibility
⚠ Installation belongs in the hands of a qualified electrician.
Keep the values of the existing breaker
Characteristic and rated current – for example B16 – depend on the cable and the circuit. The hi-fi breaker must have exactly these values.
The marking on the breaker
Example “B16” – characteristic and rated current must suit the circuit.
B
Characteristic
B common in homes, C for high inrush currents
16
Rated current in amperes
matched to cable cross-section and installation
35 mm
DIN rail
Standard mounting rail according to EN 60715
Installation by a qualified electrician
Work in the consumer unit is life-threatening and must only be carried out by a qualified electrician. Your electrician will also check whether the breaker suits the existing installation.
Fits the standard DIN rail
Hi-fi circuit breakers are mounted on the 35 mm DIN rail in the consumer unit just like ordinary circuit breakers.
The RCD stays
The residual current device (RCD) in the consumer unit is not replaced by the hi-fi breaker – it remains indispensable for personal protection.
Ideally with a dedicated circuit
The breaker is most effective in a separate circuit just for the hi-fi system, ideally combined with high-quality sockets, power strips and power cables.

Frequently asked questions about hi-fi circuit breakers
What is a hi-fi circuit breaker?
An audiophile miniature circuit breaker for the consumer unit. It protects the circuit like a standard breaker but relies on high-quality contacts, solid terminals and a low-vibration design.
May I replace a circuit breaker myself?
No. Work in the consumer unit must only be carried out by a qualified electrician. Have the installation done by your electrician.
Will a hi-fi breaker fit my consumer unit?
As a rule, yes. Hi-fi circuit breakers are mounted on the 35 mm DIN rail like standard circuit breakers. Your electrician will check the details on site.
What ratings must the new breaker have?
Characteristic and rated current must match the previous breaker or the cable – in homes often B16. Higher ratings are not permitted.
Do I need a dedicated circuit for my system?
Not necessarily, but it is recommended. In a separate hi-fi circuit, the breaker acts only on your system, and interference from other appliances is reduced.
Does the hi-fi breaker replace the RCD?
No. The residual current device (RCD) protects people and remains indispensable. The hi-fi breaker only replaces the circuit breaker of the respective circuit.
What sonic effects can I expect?
Hi-fi enthusiasts often report more detail, a calmer background and better staging. How clear the difference is depends on the system and the house wiring.
What does the breaker combine well with?
With high-quality sockets, power strips, mains filters and power cables. This optimises the entire power supply from the consumer unit to the device.
