Vinyl Accessories · Inner Sleeves
A record played twice a month spends roughly 90 minutes a year on the platter — and the remaining 8,670 hours on the shelf. Sound quality is almost always discussed in terms of cartridge, phono stage and turntable, and almost never in terms of the conditions in which the medium spends the vast majority of its life. Yet that is precisely where it is decided whether an LP will still sound in twenty years' time the way it did on day one. The clearaudio 12" Anti-Static Record Inner Sleeves address exactly that: a thoroughly considered inner sleeve that protects vinyl on the shelf and in the hand alike.
The sleeves are made from high-density, acid-free polypropylene. Acid-free is not a marketing label here but an archival prerequisite: acidic materials — the classic paper inner sleeve first among them — release compounds over the years that chemically attack vinyl and sleeve printing. Dense polypropylene, by contrast, remains inert and preserves the value of a collection for decades. One pack contains 50 sleeves — enough to see to an entire shelf in a single sitting.
Anti-static
Far less charge separation than paper — less dust in the groove
Acid-free
High-density polypropylene with no chemical reaction with vinyl
Low friction
Exceptionally smooth surface — the LP glides out instead of snagging
The original paper inner sleeve is the most underrated adversary any record has. Paper abrades, paper sheds fibres, and paper generates precisely the electrostatic charge that then attracts and holds dust from the room air. The physics behind it is triboelectric charge separation: when two dissimilar materials rub against one another, charge carriers migrate from one surface to the other. The charged record surface then acts as a magnet for particles — and anything that settles in the groove ends up as impulsive crackle during playback.
High-density polypropylene produces markedly less charge separation on contact with PVC. The result is audible and visible straight away: less dust adhesion, fewer disturbances, noticeably less cleaning before every play. Anyone who has washed their collection or prepared it with a record brush will hold that condition far longer with these sleeves — instead of undoing it every time the record is pulled out of a paper sleeve.
Then there is long-term archiving. Paper is hygroscopic: it takes up moisture and releases it again, with fibre abrasion and, in acidic grades, chemical load on vinyl and sleeve printing. The acid-free polypropylene used here stays dimensionally stable and chemically inert. For collections meant to last decades, that is not a convenience feature but the foundation.
The second effect is the one you feel immediately: the exceptionally smooth surface lets the LP glide out with almost no resistance. No tugging, no catching the grooved surface on the edge of the sleeve, no abrasion. The point matters more than it sounds — on most records, fine scratches and scuffs originate not in playback but in taking the disc out and putting it back. A sleeve that defuses that moment protects the record where it is most vulnerable.
The fit is equally well judged: the sleeves go into standard LP jackets and can just as easily be slipped over the original paper inner sleeve. Collectors who would rather not discard the original — for completeness, or because of printed inners carrying lyrics and photographs — do not have to choose. Double albums, gatefold editions and heavyweight 180 g pressings remain easy to handle too.
Swapping them over is a rewarding hour's work: 50 sleeves, a quiet table, and an entire shelf is sorted for good. Anyone already sorting, cataloguing or cleaning a collection can fold the sleeve change into the same pass.
clearaudio has been based in Erlangen since 1978 and is one of the very few manufacturers worldwide to build turntables, tonearms and cartridges entirely in Germany. The accessory range follows the same logic: no bought-in mass-market goods, but products that match the company's own depth of manufacture and standards. Anyone who knows clearaudio as an analogue specialist knows that nothing here is a sideline made simply to fill a shelf.
On the price list of a well-sorted system, inner sleeves sit right at the bottom — while their effect on what comes out of the loudspeakers ten years from now sits surprisingly near the top. A new cartridge improves playback from today onwards. A clean, mechanically unstressed record improves playback from today onwards and keeps that advantage for the entire life of the collection. As a thematic companion, clearaudio offers the Groove Archive Box, a handcrafted archive box in FSC-certified wood for up to 50 LPs — sleeve and storage are designed to work together.
