Clearaudio Smart Stylus Gauge - Tonearm weight scale - Clearaudio

Turntable accessories - Adjustment & calibration

The weight of the tonearm is one of the most sound-critical parameters in analog playback - and at the same time one of the most underestimated. Too much tracking pressure damages the grooves and the stylus; too little leads to distortion, edge transfer and unstable tracking. Both cost sound. The Clearaudio Smart Stylus Gauge gives back control: precise, without batteries, without electronics - a well thought-out mechanical tool from the Erlangen precision specialist, which is placed directly on the turntable and delivers a reliable measurement result in seconds.

Clearaudio supplies the Smart Stylus Gauge as a standard accessory with selected turntables from the Concept series - a clear sign that even the manufacturer relies on this tool when it comes to correctly setting its own cartridges. Made of lightweight, robust aluminum with carefully engraved markings, it fits in with the clearaudio product environment both visually and qualitatively.

The Smart Stylus Gauge works according to the classic lever principle - one of the oldest and most reliable mechanical measuring principles. The gauge is placed on the record level - ideally directly on the turntable - and the tonearm is lowered onto the marked measuring surface. The contact pressure of the stylus deflects the calibrated aluminum measuring field and the deflection is read on the engraved scale. The result is available immediately and without interpretation: the actual contact weight in grams, measured at the exact position where the needle later touches the groove.

Compared to digital scales, this principle has a decisive practical advantage: no battery, no calibration effort, no electronics that can drift. The Smart Stylus Gauge is permanently ready for use - whether for the first adjustment of a new pickup or for a quick cross-check after a stylus change. The measuring range of 800 mg to 3 g covers the vast majority of all available MM and MC cartridges, including clearaudio's own systems, for which the manufacturer specifies tracking forces between 2.2 g (MC) and 2.4 g (MM).

Each cartridge has an optimum tracking weight range defined by the manufacturer - the range in which the compliance of the stylus, tracking ability and distortion behavior are in balance. If the weight is too low, the stylus loses groove contact in loud passages, distortion occurs and, in extreme cases, the stylus jumps. If it is too high, the needle and grooves wear out more quickly and the sound becomes hard and compressed. A difference of just 0.2 g can be audible in a high-resolution chain - so the precision of the setting pays off directly in the sound result.
