Goldring is one of the oldest cartridge brands in the world - founded in Berlin in 1906, based in England since 1933 and active in phonography since 1954. The company has a philosophy that has not changed over the decades: To reproduce recordings as originally as possible without imposing its own sonic signature. The Goldring E series brings this philosophy to the entry-level range - with technologies that are surprisingly rare in the affordable price segment. The E1 is the entry-level model in the series and offers the same system body and magnet architecture as its more expensive siblings - differentiated only by the stylus carrier and stylus cut.
The needle carrier of the E1 is made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic - carbon is light, stiff and effectively dampens high-frequency resonances of the carrier. This makes it a serious alternative to aluminum or boron, which are only used in more expensive models. At the tip is a spherically ground stylus with a 0.6 mil radius, which works reliably and harmoniously with any medium to heavy tonearm - exactly the tonearm bearings that are installed in most entry-level and mid-range turntables.
Magnetic Duplex™
Two-magnet architecture modeled on the cutting head - better channel separation than standard MM
Factory setting
VTA preset, no tracking correction necessary - can be installed immediately, no compromises
Carbon needle carrier
Lightweight, rigid, low resonance - carbon fiber reinforced as an effective alternative to aluminum or boron
Magnetic Duplex Technology™ - the difference in the core
A classic moving magnet cartridge works with a single permanent magnet at the inner end of the stylus. Magnetic Duplex Technology™ doubles the electromagnetic force in the central axis - two magnets work together to emulate the geometry of the cutting head that cuts the groove in the lacquer film during record mastering. This has a direct sonic consequence: the scanning of the groove becomes more symmetrical, the channel separation more precise, and the stereo image becomes more stable and tangible. If you compare the same recording with a single magnet system and the E1, you will notice that instruments are easier to localize and the stage develops more depth.
Precise factory settings & easy installation
Goldring has developed the E1 with a clear practical approach. During manufacture, the vertical tracking angle (VTA) is pre-adjusted in the micro range using an adjustment screw - the angle between the stylus and the plate surface is set correctly at the factory. In practice, this means: no horizontal tracking correction required, no complex geometry adjustment. The system is ready for operation immediately after insertion into the headshell. In addition, there is another practical detail: the fastening threads are embedded directly in the system body - no separate locknut required, a single screw is sufficient. The connection pins are clearly color-coded, virtually eliminating wiring errors.
Classification in the E-Series
The three models in the E series share the system body, Magnetic Duplex Technology™ and the mounting standard - they differ specifically in two parameters: Needle carrier and needle ground joint. The E1 (red) uses a carbon fiber-reinforced carrier with a spherical needle: ideal as an upgrade for series systems and as a solid entry into the world of gold rings. The E2 (green) replaces the carbon carrier with a stiffer aluminum pin - the sound gains resolution in the mids, the bass remains just as precise. Finally, the E3 (purple) combines the aluminum carrier of the E2 with a super-elliptical stylus (0.3 × 0.7 mil), which dives much deeper into the groove structure and exposes considerably more high-frequency information. If you start with the E1, you can gradually move upwards by changing the needle insert - without having to change the system body.
