What does a phono cartridge actually do — and why is it so important?

The phono cartridge is the first and most critical link in the analogue playback chain. A tiny diamond stylus rides through the record groove, tracing minute modulations on both groove walls — modulations that contain the entire music signal. The cartridge converts these mechanical vibrations into an electrical voltage via an electromagnetic or electrodynamic principle, which is then amplified to line level by the phono preamplifier. Whatever the cartridge fails to extract from the groove cannot be reconstructed by any downstream component. That is why a quality cartridge — together with a good phono stage — is the single most effective upgrade for any turntable.

What types of phono cartridge are there — and how do they differ?

There are four common generator principles: MM (Moving Magnet), MC Low Output, MC High Output and MI (Moving Iron). They differ in which part is attached to the cantilever and moves — the magnet, the coil or an iron piece. This directly affects the moving mass (and thus tracking ability), the output voltage, the required amplification and the sonic character. The following table provides a concise overview:

How does the stylus profile influence the sound — and what types are there?

The stylus profile determines how precisely the diamond follows the delicate modulations of the record groove. It affects resolution, treble behaviour, inner-groove distortion and record wear. The general rule: the slimmer and more complex the profile, the more information is extracted from the groove — but the more demanding the alignment becomes and the higher the cost. What is compliance — and why does it need to match the tonearm?

Compliance describes how soft or stiff the cantilever suspension is, expressed in µm/mN (micrometres per millinewton). Together with the effective mass of the tonearm, the cartridge forms a spring-mass system with a resonant frequency. This resonance should ideally fall between 8 and 12 Hz — below the lowest musical frequencies but above typical disturbances caused by footfall and record warps. If the compliance does not match the arm, the result is either uncontrolled wobbling (high compliance on a heavy arm) or poor bass tracking (low compliance on a light arm). Rule of thumb: high compliance (above 20 µm/mN) pairs with lightweight tonearms, low compliance (below 15 µm/mN) with medium-mass and heavy arms.

Do I need a special phono preamplifier for an MC cartridge?

For low-output MC cartridges, yes. Their output voltage of 0.1 to 0.6 mV is far below the level of an MM system and requires significantly higher, yet extremely low-noise amplification. There are three routes: a dedicated MC phono preamplifier, a phono stage with a switchable MM/MC input, or a passive MC step-up transformer before an MM input. High-output MC cartridges sidestep this issue — their output is sufficient for a standard MM input at 47 kΩ, making them an ideal entry point into the MC world. MI systems are just as uncomplicated as MM in this regard.

What does load impedance mean — and why is it so important for MC cartridges?

The load impedance is the resistance that the phono preamplifier presents to the cartridge. For MM systems the standard is 47 kΩ — here the challenge lies more in the correct input capacitance (pF), which depends heavily on the phono cable and the stage itself. Too much capacitance creates an unpleasant treble peak; too little produces a dull sound. For MC cartridges the optimal load resistance is manufacturer-specific and typically lies between 20 and 1,000 ohms. Quality phono preamplifiers offer adjustable impedance settings to fine-tune the system to the cartridge. The right impedance determines tonal balance, dynamics and spatial imaging — it is well worth experimenting by ear.

How long does a cartridge last — and how do I know when the stylus is worn?

Lifespan depends on the stylus profile, tracking force, record condition and maintenance. Spherical styli last roughly 500 to 700 hours under normal use, elliptical types around 1,000 hours, and premium Shibata or MicroLine profiles can reach 2,000 hours or more with proper care. Typical signs of wear: the sound becomes increasingly dull or lifeless, sibilance on vocals increases, stereo imaging loses precision, and in severe cases distortion appears in louder passages. Regular listeners should have the stylus inspected every three to five years — specialist HiFi dealers offer microscope checks for this purpose.

How do I align a cartridge correctly — what matters most?

Careful alignment is the key to unlocking a cartridge's full potential — and to preserving your records. The most important parameters are tracking force (follow the manufacturer's recommendation, ideally measured with a digital stylus gauge), overhang (the distance from the stylus tip to the tonearm pivot, set using a protractor), offset angle and tracking error (largely determined by the overhang), azimuth (the vertical orientation of the stylus relative to the groove) and VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle — the height of the tonearm relative to the record surface). Especially with demanding profiles such as Shibata or MicroLine, every minute spent on alignment pays dividends. If you are unsure, having the initial setup done by a specialist dealer is money well spent.

MM, MC or MI — which type is right for me?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but there is solid guidance: if you want to enjoy vinyl without fuss and own a turntable with a built-in or simple external phono stage, a good MM cartridge will serve you superbly. The replaceable stylus keeps running costs low, and the high output places no special demands on the electronics. If you seek the ultimate in fine detail, spatial depth and transient precision — and are prepared to invest in a quality MC phono stage — a low-output MC delivers the pinnacle of analogue reproduction. High-output MC cartridges are the smart middle ground: MC sound quality without dedicated amplification. MI cartridges from makers such as Grado or Nagaoka offer a fascinating alternative with full-bodied, musically flowing reproduction and the convenience of replaceable styli. Ultimately it is not the principle alone that matters, but the quality of execution — and the synergy with your tonearm, phono stage and personal taste.

Pickup - Moving Magnet - Goldring E-Series

Within the Goldring E-Series, the E2 is the carefully calibrated middle ground - not the most affordable model, but not the sonic maximum either. It shares the system body, Magnetic Duplex Technology™ and the exact same assembly logic with the E1 and E3, but differs in a decisive change of material: instead of the carbon-fiber-reinforced needle carrier of the E1, the E2 uses a slim aluminum stylus. Aluminum is stiffer and more dimensionally stable than carbon at a comparable weight - the stylus carrier transmits the groove information with less of its own mechanical characteristics, which is reflected in a more precise resolution of the mids and high frequencies.

The spherical stylus with 0.6 mil radius is the same as on the E1 - the sound gain is not due to a sharper cut, but to the better mechanical coupling between diamond and stylus carrier that aluminum makes possible. Lowbeats describes it aptly: "With the E2, the resolution in the mids increases noticeably, while the bass retains its precision and contour. It is the system for all those who want to further exploit the sonic potential of the Goldring architecture without taking the step to the elliptical stylus of the E3.

All three models in the E series use the same patented magnetic architecture. A classic moving magnet cartridge uses a single permanent magnet to create a magnetic flux in the pole pieces. Magnetic Duplex Technology™ doubles this force along the central axis - thus emulating the geometry of the cutting head that cuts the groove into the lacquer film during record mastering. The result: groove scanning becomes more symmetrical, the left and right track information is separated more cleanly and the stereo image gains stability and depth. This design advantage applies to all three E models - the E2 combines it with the added sonic value of the aluminum stylus carrier.

Factory setting & assembly

Goldring pre-adjusts the vertical tracking angle (VTA) of the E2 at the factory using an adjustment screw in the micro range - the angle between the stylus and the record surface is correct ex works. No horizontal tracking correction, no time-consuming calibration after installation. The system is ready for use immediately after it is fitted to the headshell. The recessed internal threads in the system body make a lock nut superfluous; a single screw per fixing point is sufficient. The connection pins are color-coded in green and clearly labeled - the E2 can be immediately distinguished from the other E models, and wiring errors are virtually eliminated.

Classification & upgrade path

The E1 (red) with carbon carrier and spherical needle is the solid entry-level model - ideal as an upgrade for supplied series systems. The E2 (green) swaps the carrier for aluminum and thus gains noticeably in midrange resolution and tonal transparency without changing the needle cut. Finally, the E3 (purple) retains the aluminum carrier of the E2, but uses a super-elliptical stylus (0.3 × 0.7 mil) - this considerably sharper cut dives deeper into the groove structure and reads high-frequency information that spherical styli physically cannot achieve. Anyone starting out with the E2 today can switch to E3 level at any time by simply replacing the needle insert - without having to replace the system body.
