Which model suits my system – EH Mk2 or EL Mk2?

If your amplifier or phono preamp only has an MM input, the EH Mk2 is the right choice: with 2.0 mV output it runs there without any additional equipment. The EL Mk2 with 0.5 mV requires an MC phono stage or a step-up transformer.

Does a high-output MC sound worse than a low-output MC?

No, both perform at a very high level. With a good MC stage, the EL Mk2 can resolve slightly finer and more airily, while the EH Mk2 scores with easy integration and a strong, low-noise signal at the MM input.

What tracking force is recommended?

The recommended tracking force is 2.0 g. Ideally, set it with a stylus force gauge and adjust the anti-skating accordingly.

Will the Hana fit my tonearm?

Weighing around 5 g and using a half-inch mount, the E Mk2 Series suits most medium-mass tonearms. For very light or very heavy arms, we are happy to advise you on the right combination.

What is the advantage of a nude-mounted elliptical diamond?

The elliptical profile traces the groove walls more accurately than a spherical tip and reduces distortion. The nude mounting saves moving mass, giving the cartridge more fine resolution and pace – while alignment remains uncritical.

Does the cartridge need a run-in period?

Yes, like any MC cartridge, the Hana reaches its full sound after a few dozen record sides. The stylus suspension becomes more supple and the sound opens up audibly.

What is the next step within the Hana family?

Above the E Series, Hana offers the S Series with Shibata stylus and the M Series with Microline stylus. These retrieve even more groove information but also place higher demands on alignment.

What does a phono cartridge actually do — and why is it so important?

The phono cartridge is the first and most critical link in the analogue playback chain. A tiny diamond stylus rides through the record groove, tracing minute modulations on both groove walls — modulations that contain the entire music signal. The cartridge converts these mechanical vibrations into an electrical voltage via an electromagnetic or electrodynamic principle, which is then amplified to line level by the phono preamplifier. Whatever the cartridge fails to extract from the groove cannot be reconstructed by any downstream component. That is why a quality cartridge — together with a good phono stage — is the single most effective upgrade for any turntable.

What types of phono cartridge are there — and how do they differ?

There are four common generator principles: MM (Moving Magnet), MC Low Output, MC High Output and MI (Moving Iron). They differ in which part is attached to the cantilever and moves — the magnet, the coil or an iron piece. This directly affects the moving mass (and thus tracking ability), the output voltage, the required amplification and the sonic character. The following table provides a concise overview:

MM (Moving Magnet) MC Low Output MC High Output MI (Moving Iron)
Principle Magnet on cantilever moves between fixed coils Tiny coils on cantilever move within a fixed magnetic field Same as MC Low Output, but with more windings for higher voltage Small iron piece on cantilever modulates a fixed magnetic field
Output voltage High (2.5–6 mV) Low (0.1–0.6 mV) Medium (1.5–2.5 mV) High (1–6 mV)
Phono input MM input (47 kΩ) MC input (20–1,000 Ω) or step-up transformer MM input (47 kΩ) MM input (47 kΩ)
Moving mass Higher (magnet is heavier) Very low (tiny coils) Higher than low-output MC (more windings) Low (only a light iron piece)
Stylus replaceable? Yes — simple swap, affordable maintenance No (rare exceptions) — retipping or replacement No (rare exceptions) — retipping or replacement Yes — same as MM systems
Sonic character Punchy, full-bodied, strong midrange — slightly less micro-detail Airy, spacious, finest detail retrieval and transients MC character, but slightly less refined than low output Natural vocal reproduction, musically flowing
Advantages Affordable, uncomplicated, replaceable stylus, high output, wide selection Highest tracking precision, best dynamics, low EMI susceptibility, balanced connection possible MC quality at the MM input — no dedicated phono stage required Low moving mass, replaceable stylus, high output, often excellent vocal reproduction
Disadvantages Higher moving mass, capacitance-sensitive (cable/input), more susceptible to EMI Expensive, stylus not replaceable, requires ultra-low-noise MC phono pre or transformer Higher moving mass than low-output MC — trade-off between convenience and performance Capacitance-sensitive like MM, smaller market selection
Price range approx. €20–800 approx. €200–15,000+ approx. €150–1,500 approx. €50–2,000

How does the stylus profile influence the sound — and what types are there?

The stylus profile determines how precisely the diamond follows the delicate modulations of the record groove. It affects resolution, treble behaviour, inner-groove distortion and record wear. The general rule: the slimmer and more complex the profile, the more information is extracted from the groove — but the more demanding the alignment becomes and the higher the cost. Here is a comparison of the most common stylus profiles:

Spherical (Conical) Elliptical Shibata MicroLine / Line Contact
Shape Spherically rounded tip (typ. 18 µm radius) Two radii — lateral 5–8 µm, longitudinal 18 µm Parabolically ground flank with very small lateral radius Geometry modelled on the cutting stylus, extremely slim contact zone
Contact area Small, point-like Slightly larger, slimmer profile across the groove Significantly larger — distributes tracking force more broadly on groove wall Very large, elongated contact zone — lowest wear characteristic
Resolution / treble Solid, limited in the high frequencies Noticeably better — less sibilance, more clarity Excellent — originally developed for quadraphonic playback up to 50 kHz Highest resolution, exceptionally low distortion even in the inner groove
Alignment tolerance Very forgiving — tolerates minor errors easily Moderate — careful alignment recommended Low — precise alignment essential Very low — only beneficial with exact setup
Lifespan (approx.) 500–700 hours 800–1,000 hours 1,500–2,000 hours 2,000+ hours
Record preservation Even wear, but higher pressure per area Somewhat better thanks to slimmer profile Very good — large contact area distributes pressure Gentlest on both stylus and record
Best suited for Beginners, DJs, older turntables, casual listening Mid-range systems, attentive listeners, best all-round compromise Upper-tier systems, audiophiles with careful setup High-end systems with optimal alignment and isolation

What is compliance — and why does it need to match the tonearm?

Compliance describes how soft or stiff the cantilever suspension is, expressed in µm/mN (micrometres per millinewton). Together with the effective mass of the tonearm, the cartridge forms a spring-mass system with a resonant frequency. This resonance should ideally fall between 8 and 12 Hz — below the lowest musical frequencies but above typical disturbances caused by footfall and record warps. If the compliance does not match the arm, the result is either uncontrolled wobbling (high compliance on a heavy arm) or poor bass tracking (low compliance on a light arm). Rule of thumb: high compliance (above 20 µm/mN) pairs with lightweight tonearms, low compliance (below 15 µm/mN) with medium-mass and heavy arms.

Do I need a special phono preamplifier for an MC cartridge?

For low-output MC cartridges, yes. Their output voltage of 0.1 to 0.6 mV is far below the level of an MM system and requires significantly higher, yet extremely low-noise amplification. There are three routes: a dedicated MC phono preamplifier, a phono stage with a switchable MM/MC input, or a passive MC step-up transformer before an MM input. High-output MC cartridges sidestep this issue — their output is sufficient for a standard MM input at 47 kΩ, making them an ideal entry point into the MC world. MI systems are just as uncomplicated as MM in this regard.

What does load impedance mean — and why is it so important for MC cartridges?

The load impedance is the resistance that the phono preamplifier presents to the cartridge. For MM systems the standard is 47 kΩ — here the challenge lies more in the correct input capacitance (pF), which depends heavily on the phono cable and the stage itself. Too much capacitance creates an unpleasant treble peak; too little produces a dull sound. For MC cartridges the optimal load resistance is manufacturer-specific and typically lies between 20 and 1,000 ohms. Quality phono preamplifiers offer adjustable impedance settings to fine-tune the system to the cartridge. The right impedance determines tonal balance, dynamics and spatial imaging — it is well worth experimenting by ear.

How long does a cartridge last — and how do I know when the stylus is worn?

Lifespan depends on the stylus profile, tracking force, record condition and maintenance. Spherical styli last roughly 500 to 700 hours under normal use, elliptical types around 1,000 hours, and premium Shibata or MicroLine profiles can reach 2,000 hours or more with proper care. Typical signs of wear: the sound becomes increasingly dull or lifeless, sibilance on vocals increases, stereo imaging loses precision, and in severe cases distortion appears in louder passages. Regular listeners should have the stylus inspected every three to five years — specialist HiFi dealers offer microscope checks for this purpose.

How do I align a cartridge correctly — what matters most?

Careful alignment is the key to unlocking a cartridge's full potential — and to preserving your records. The most important parameters are tracking force (follow the manufacturer's recommendation, ideally measured with a digital stylus gauge), overhang (the distance from the stylus tip to the tonearm pivot, set using a protractor), offset angle and tracking error (largely determined by the overhang), azimuth (the vertical orientation of the stylus relative to the groove) and VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle — the height of the tonearm relative to the record surface). Especially with demanding profiles such as Shibata or MicroLine, every minute spent on alignment pays dividends. If you are unsure, having the initial setup done by a specialist dealer is money well spent.

MM, MC or MI — which type is right for me?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but there is solid guidance: if you want to enjoy vinyl without fuss and own a turntable with a built-in or simple external phono stage, a good MM cartridge will serve you superbly. The replaceable stylus keeps running costs low, and the high output places no special demands on the electronics. If you seek the ultimate in fine detail, spatial depth and transient precision — and are prepared to invest in a quality MC phono stage — a low-output MC delivers the pinnacle of analogue reproduction. High-output MC cartridges are the smart middle ground: MC sound quality without dedicated amplification. MI cartridges from makers such as Grado or Nagaoka offer a fascinating alternative with full-bodied, musically flowing reproduction and the convenience of replaceable styli. Ultimately it is not the principle alone that matters, but the quality of execution — and the synergy with your tonearm, phono stage and personal taste.

Cartridges · Moving Coil

There are cartridges that impress – and there are cartridges you never want to take off the tonearm again. The Hana E Mk2 Series firmly belongs to the second kind. Behind the name “Hana”, Japanese for “flower”, stands Excel Sound Corporation of Japan: a company that has been building cartridges for decades and spent many years working behind the scenes as an OEM specialist for other renowned brands. With Hana, that experience finally appears under its own name – and the E Series is the gateway to a sound usually reserved for far more expensive designs.

The revised Mk2 generation comes in two versions: the EH Mk2 with high output, which works with any conventional MM phono input, and the EL Mk2 with low output for MC phono stages and step-up transformers. Both share the same heart: a nude-mounted elliptical diamond on a lightweight aluminium cantilever, backed by proven moving-coil technology built with typical Japanese precision. The result is the unmistakable MC character – resolution, speed and fine dynamics – with a naturalness and warmth that simply lets the music flow.

Sound & Character

The sound of the E Mk2 Series can be summed up in one word: musical. Rather than dissecting details analytically, the Hana places them in a coherent whole. Voices stand in the room with body and breath, acoustic instruments regain their tonal colour and natural decay, and the soundstage builds convincingly in width and depth. The bass is tight and well defined without thickening; the treble is finely resolved yet never sharp or fatiguing – even after a long listening session.

It is precisely this balance of resolution and tonal beauty that has earned the E Series a reputation in the international press and among vinyl enthusiasts as one of the great value picks among MC cartridges. Anyone coming from a good MM cartridge often experiences the moment when the system suddenly “opens up”: more air, more pace, more life – with a familiar sense of ease.

Design & Technology

In a moving-coil design, tiny coils move within the field of a fixed magnet. Because these coils have only a few windings and are extremely light, the cartridge follows the groove modulations with particular agility – the foundation for the fine resolution and fast transient response that MC cartridges are prized for.

The elliptical stylus profile is a deliberate compromise in the best sense: it traces the groove walls far more accurately than a spherical tip, reducing distortion, especially towards the inner grooves. At the same time, it is less sensitive to alignment than extreme profiles such as Shibata or Microline and is forgiving with slightly worn or older pressings. The diamond is nude-mounted – set directly into the cantilever without additional carrier mass. The lower moving mass directly benefits liveliness and treble resolution.

Mounting is via the standard half-inch fitting with threaded holes in the body – this makes installation easier and ensures a firm, low-resonance coupling to the headshell. With a weight of around 5 g and a recommended tracking force of 2.0 g, the Hana integrates easily with the vast majority of medium-mass tonearms.

Models & Range

EH Mk2 (High Output): With 2.0 mV output, the EH Mk2 is the ideal entry into the world of MC. It runs on a standard 47 kΩ MM phono input – which most integrated amplifiers, phono preamps and receivers already offer. No step-up transformer, no extra MC stage, no fuss.

EL Mk2 (Low Output): The EL Mk2 delivers 0.5 mV and is aimed at listeners with a high-quality MC phono stage or step-up transformer. The lower coil mass of this version allows even finer resolution and more airiness – provided the subsequent amplification is quiet enough.

Within the Hana range, the E Series is the entry point. Above it sit the S Series with Shibata stylus, the M Series with Microline stylus and the flagship Umami Red. Those seeking the maximum of groove information will find the next step there – those looking for a musical, uncomplicated MC for the long run have already arrived with the E Mk2 Series.

Installation & Setup

For installation, we recommend setting the tracking force to 2.0 g with a stylus force gauge and adjusting anti-skating accordingly. Precise alignment with a protractor (overhang and offset angle) brings audibly more calm and clarity from the elliptical stylus. Like any MC cartridge, the Hana reveals its full potential after a run-in period of a few dozen record sides – the suspension becomes more supple and the sound more open and relaxed.
