Hi-fi accessories - component isolation & vibration decoupling

Every hi-fi component stands in an acoustic field - surrounded by vibrations originating from the floor, the rack, the speakers and the room itself. These vibrations are transmitted through the feet of each device to its mechanics and electronics: microphonic effects in tubes, jitter in sensitive clock oscillators of DACs and streamers, resonances in the drive of a CD player or turntable. The effect is subtle - but audible: a bloated bass, a flat stage, a slight obscuring of fine details. The IsoAcoustics OREA series addresses this with a patented isolation concept developed by the same Canadian team that designed the renowned GAIA speaker feet and zaZen platforms.

The OREA isolators (the name is derived from the Ourea - the nine Greek gods of the mountains, all descendants of Gaia) are available in four load classes and are individually packaged to allow maximum flexibility in combination and arrangement. They are made from machined stainless steel and have a multi-layered internal structure that absorbs vibrations in a controlled manner - not elastically reflecting them. The effect has been metrologically validated at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and is documented by Stereophile, StereoNET and The Audiophile Man as a convincing sound improvement.

Controlled damping
Vibrations are absorbed and converted into heat - no bouncing, no elastic recovery
4 variants
Graphite, bronze, indigo, bordeaux - graduated load classes from 1.8 to 14.4 kg per piece
Available individually
Maximum flexibility - 3 to 6 pieces per device depending on weight and center of gravity distribution
Functional principle & technical design

Each OREA isolator consists of three functional layers. The upper flange element, made of soft polymer, adheres to the underside of the component with a controlled suction cup effect and absorbs incoming vibrations. The core - IsoAcoustics' patented damping element - controls both vertical and horizontal movement and converts vibration energy into heat. The lower flange element transfers residual energy to the footprint in a defined manner without generating feedback. All three layers work together like a mechanical valve for vibrations: Energy flows in, is absorbed - and does not flow back.

A decisive design aspect is the direction-dependent suspension mechanism: Vertical energy (e.g. from engine vibrations) and horizontal energy (e.g. from sound pressure waves from the speakers) are treated separately. This prevents a shift in the resonance frequency of the device and guarantees stable, predictable decoupling. In contrast to simple rubber feet or springs, which reflect vibrations elastically and can generate new resonances in the process, the device remains statically stable on OREA isolators - it does not bob or float.

Sound effect & press reviews

The audible effect of OREA isolators is most pronounced under signal sources - turntables, DACs, CD players and streamers - where the most sensitive converters and clock generators are directly affected by microphonic effects. But the effect is also clearly perceptible under preamplifiers and power amplifiers: StereoNET describes a more focused sound with more air and clarity under all components. Stereophile reviewer Art Dudley mounted OREA-Indigo under his Garrard 301 turntable and was so convinced of the improvement that he subsequently tested the GAIA speaker feet from the same manufacturer.

Audiophiles often describe the effect as an opening up of the sound image: the bass loses its uncontrolled overflow, the mids become more precise and full-bodied, and the background between the notes becomes calmer - quieter. Details that were previously obscured by diffuse vibrations become more prominent. Spatial separation improves audibly and instruments appear more clearly positioned. An OREA user at IsoAcoustics puts it aptly: "The music breathes more freely."

A comparison of the four variants
Orea Graphite
Load capacity: up to 1.8 kg
Ø × H: 40 × 27 mm
For very lightweight devices: small DACs, phono preamps, power supplies, compact streamers
Orea Bronze
Load capacity: up to 3.6 kg
Ø × H: 50 × 29 mm
For lightweight turntables, CD players, small amplifiers and compact active loudspeakers
Orea Indigo
Load capacity: up to 7.2 kg
Ø × H: 58 × 33 mm
The best-selling variant - for integrated amplifiers, turntables, preamplifiers and most floorstanding speakers
Orea Bordeaux
Load capacity: up to 14.4 kg
Ø × H: 67 × 36 mm
For heavy power amplifiers, monoblocks, large floorstanding speakers and heavy turntable plinths
Correct selection & application

Each OREA variant operates in an optimum load range of 40-90 % of its rated load capacity. If the load is too low, the damping element is not compressed enough - the isolation effect decreases. If it is too high, it is overloaded and also loses efficiency. For example, an integrated amplifier weighing 14 kg would ideally be operated with three or four Orea Indigo instead of bronze: Three Indigo together carry a maximum of 21.6 kg and would come to approx. 4.7 kg each if evenly distributed - comfortably within the optimum working range. Variants must not be mixed, as different compliance properties would skew the device and impair decoupling.

Typically, 3 to 6 isolators are used per appliance. In the case of uneven weight distribution - such as an amplifier with a heavier transformer on one side - IsoAcoustics recommends placing two isolators under the heavier side and one on the lighter side. Under loudspeakers, the IsoAcoustics logo should always face the listening position: The isolators are optimized for lateral vibration damping, which is most effective in this orientation.
