Every record is damaged when it is played. That's not an opinion - it's physics. As the stylus moves through the groove, it creates a pressure wave that travels ahead of it at high speed and damages the groove walls before the stylus has even touched them. Added to this is the direct mechanical abrasion caused by friction and the stick-slip phenomenon. These processes are microscopic - but they add up with every playback, and once lost, high-frequency components never return. Since 1979, however, there has been a chemical solution that stops this process: the Last Factory FORMULA 2 Record Preservative - developed by Dr. Catalano and since then the most recommended record preservative in the audiophile world.
FORMULA 2 is not a cleaner or a superficial coating. It bonds to the vinyl structure of the groove wall on a molecular level - the treatment penetrates the top ten molecular layers of the material and becomes a permanent part of the groove surface. The result: the groove wall completely resists the damaging effects of needle shock waves. Normal cleaning, even with vacuum machines, does not affect this protective film - the agent has an extreme affinity for vinyl and, once applied, remains permanently.
Molecular protection
Penetrates 10 molecular layers deep into the groove surface - no surface film, no residue, cannot be removed by cleaners
200+ plays
Preserves the sound at first pressing level - measurably less distortion, smoother sound image
Proven since 1979
Developed by Dr. Catalano, recommended by Stereophile, Positive Feedback and audiophile collectors worldwide
The physics of groove wear
What happens at the molecular level during every playing process is both fascinating and frightening. When the stylus passes through the groove with a contact force of approx. 2 grams, it generates an effective pressure of several tons per square centimetre on the contact surface - combined with frictional heat that can briefly rise to over 100 degrees Celsius. The resulting pressure wave travels ahead of the needle and damages the groove walls even before direct contact is made. Scanning electron microscope images show two main wear patterns: so-called concchoidal breaking of the groove surface and the tearing off of small vinyl particles due to the stick-slip phenomenon - the interaction between the needle and the groove wall, in which the needle briefly becomes stuck and then detaches again.
FORMULA 2 addresses precisely this mechanism: it chemically improves the molecular stability and cohesion of the groove wall surface so that it fully resists the pressure waves of the needle. The vinyl is not coated - the formula becomes part of the vinyl itself. As there is no surface residue, there is nothing for the needle to pick up and transfer to the diamond. For this reason, overdosing is expressly harmless.
Audible & measurable effect
The effect of FORMULA 2 is not only of a protective nature - it is clearly audible the first time a treated record is played. According to the publisher of the International Audio Review, the Record Preservative reduces intermodulation distortion in the high frequency range by almost 10 dB, measured on a test record. This corresponds to a halving of the perceived distortion intensity. What specialist editors and users report uniformly: Mid-range frequencies appear clearer and more full-bodied, the focus of instruments in the room is sharper, background noise is significantly reduced and the fine dynamics - those small volume gradations that give life to a musical experience - emerge more precisely.
Stereophile carried out a direct comparison test: Two identical new records were played thirty times on the same groove section, one treated, one untreated. At the end of the test series, the treated record sounded clearly fresher and more precise than its untreated counterpart. Remarkably, the difference in sound was not only audible after 30 playbacks, but was already noticeable on the first playback. Jack English wrote in Stereophile that he has been using FORMULA 2 since its release in 1979 and can confirm that his records still sound as good today as they did back then. Greg Weaver described the Record Preservative in Positive Feedback as indispensable for anyone who is serious about vinyl.
Application & important notes
The application takes 30 seconds per side. Fill the supplied pipette halfway, apply a few drops to the microfiber applicator and sweep evenly over the groove surface - twice around is enough. The liquid evaporates quickly, leaves no visible residue and is completely odorless after drying. Important: Never use too much liquid or apply it directly to the record - excess can lead to unwanted crackling. Use with a panel washer for even more even distribution of the product.
Mandatory: Before treatment with FORMULA 2, the panel must be thoroughly cleaned - ideally with the LAST Power Cleaner (FORMULA 1) for the initial treatment. FORMULA 2 only penetrates a clean groove surface; embedded press residues or dirt prevent the optimum effect and can be permanently trapped under the protective film. The treatment is one-off and permanent - FORMULA 3 (All-Purpose Cleaner) can then be used again for daily cleaning before each play without affecting the protective film.
FORMULA 2 is the first choice for anyone who wants to permanently protect valuable first pressings or rare editions, who has an extensive collection and doesn't want to risk further wear and tear, or who simply wants to ensure that every record in their collection sounds as it did on day one - today, and in twenty years' time. The bottle will not spoil and can be stored indefinitely. With the correct dosage of approx. 0.3 ml per application, a 60 ml bottle is sufficient for around 85 to 90 LPs on both sides. FORMULA 2 is also available in 240 ml and 480 ml for larger collections.
