Ortofon MC X Series
Moving coil in four levels – from the MC X10 to the MC X40
Moving-coil cartridges are known for particularly fine resolution: instead of a magnet, tiny coils move, the moving mass is low and the stylus tracks the groove very precisely. With the MC X series, Ortofon offers this technology in four levels. All models share the same basic concept and differ mainly in stylus profile and fine-tuning – so you can find the right cartridge for your system and your expectations.
The four models of the MC X series
The step from MM into the world of MC.
Finer profile for more detail and calm.
High resolution for high-quality turntables.
The flagship of the series with the finest profile.
The models compared
The higher the number, the finer the stylus profile and the more precisely the stylus reads the groove:
| Model | Stylus profile | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| MC X10 | Elliptical | MM users who want to discover the MC sound |
| MC X20 | Fine Line | More detail and calm, even towards the centre of the record |
| MC X30 | Shibata | High-quality turntables and demanding listeners |
| MC X40 | Replicant 100 | The maximum of the series – for systems that reveal every detail |

Connecting correctly
An MC cartridge delivers a much lower signal than an MM cartridge. That is why it needs suitable amplification:
- —Phono stage with MC input: The most direct solution. Make sure the load impedance can be set to suit the cartridge.
- —MC step-up transformer: Raises the signal to MM level – ideal if your amplifier only has an MM input. You will find suitable models under Ortofon MC Step-Up Transformers.
- —Good cable: The low-level MC signal in particular benefits from a high-quality, well-shielded tonearm cable.
Installation & care
Fine profiles only show their strengths with precise setting of overhang, angle and tracking force.
As is usual with MC cartridges, you do not replace the stylus yourself. Get in touch with us when it is worn.
Regular stylus cleaning and clean records noticeably extend its life.
Tools for alignment and care can be found under Ortofon Accessories.
Frequently asked questions about the Ortofon MC X series
Which MC X model suits me?
The MC X10 is the entry point for those moving up from MM. The higher the quality of turntable, tonearm and phono stage, the more a higher model such as the MC X30 or MC X40 pays off. Tell us about your system – we will help you choose.
Can I run an MC X on my MM input?
Not directly – the signal is too low. With an MC step-up transformer or a phono stage with MC input it works without any problem.
Can the stylus be replaced?
No, on MC cartridges the stylus is permanently connected to the generator. If it is worn, get in touch – we will tell you what options there are.
Is the move from MM to MC worth it?
If turntable, tonearm and phono stage can reveal the finer resolution: yes. MC cartridges usually sound more open and detailed. On a simpler system, a good MM cartridge such as the 2M series is often the more balanced choice.
