UHQCD – ultimate precision in a classic format
A perfectly normal CD – just made with extraordinary care.
The UHQCD (Ultimate High Quality CD) is a refinement of the classic compact disc. A special manufacturing process using liquid photopolymer moulds the tiny data pits with exceptional precision – for a clean read signal in the player.
And it stays fully compatible: every UHQCD plays in any ordinary CD player.
At a glance
Precise pits
Liquid photopolymer fills the stamper completely – the pits are moulded more accurately.
100 % CD-compatible
Normal CD standard: plays in CD players, in the car and on a computer.
From Japan
Developed by the Japanese pressing plant Memory-Tech – introduced in 2018.
Ideal for fine detail
Especially popular for vocals, jazz, classical and acoustic recordings.

What is a UHQCD?
For a conventional CD, hot polycarbonate is injected into the stamper mould. The viscous plastic cannot always fill the finest structures completely – the edges of the pits end up slightly rounded.
The UHQCD from Japanese manufacturer Memory-Tech takes a different route: a liquid photopolymer is applied between the stamper and the substrate disc, filling the structures almost completely before being cured with UV light. Memory-Tech also uses the high-quality materials of its earlier HQCD.

Technical features of the UHQCD
Four points set the UHQCD apart from a standard CD – and make it so popular with audiophile collectors:
Photopolymer layer
Moulds the pits more precisely than classic injection moulding – the basis for a clean read signal.
Optimised pressing
Fine-tuned stamper and manufacturing technology for a particularly uniform disc.
Less scattering
According to the manufacturer, the disc reflects the laser more evenly, which is said to reduce jitter and read errors.
Fully compatible
The UHQCD conforms to the normal CD standard – no special player needed.
03
Listening on a new level – an honest look
UHQCDs are especially popular for productions where fine nuances and clean spatial imaging matter:
Many listeners report more calm, clarity and fine detail – even on solid CD players, and all the more so on high-end systems. Worth knowing: the stored audio data conforms to the CD standard. Any benefits arise when the disc is read in the player; as always, the mastering has the greatest influence – and many UHQCD editions are based on careful new masterings.

Frequently asked questions about UHQCD
What is a UHQCD?
The Ultimate High Quality CD is a CD from Japanese manufacturer Memory-Tech in which the data layer is formed with liquid photopolymer instead of classic injection moulding. This reproduces the pits with particular accuracy.
Does a UHQCD play in every CD player?
Yes. The UHQCD conforms to the normal CD standard and plays in any CD player, car stereo and computer drive.
Does a UHQCD sound better than a normal CD?
The audio data conforms to the CD standard. The more precise manufacturing is meant to improve how the player reads the disc, and many listeners report more clarity. The biggest difference, however, comes from the mastering of the edition.
What is the difference between UHQCD and SHM-CD?
The SHM-CD relies on a particularly transparent polycarbonate, the UHQCD on a different manufacturing process with liquid photopolymer. Both are fully CD-compatible.
Can I rip a UHQCD?
Yes, like any normal CD. The manufacturing benefits concern how the disc is read in the player – the extracted audio data corresponds to the CD format.
What does MQA-CD on a UHQCD mean?
Some UHQCDs additionally contain MQA-encoded data. They play normally in any CD player; an MQA-capable DAC can unfold higher-resolution playback from them.
Who developed the UHQCD?
The Japanese pressing plant Memory-Tech, which had previously developed the HQCD. The UHQCD was introduced in 2018.
How do I care for UHQCDs?
Like any CD: hold it by the edge, clean it with a soft microfibre cloth in straight lines from the centre outwards and store it upright in its case.
