The Premium Editions

UHQR, One-Step & 45-RPM: the pinnacle of audiophile vinyl

Within the realm of audiophile vinyl records, there is a top tier of pressings that are significantly above the standard. Analogue Productions’ UHQR (Ultra High Quality Record) pressings use 200g Clarity Vinyl and are manufactured using particularly elaborate processes. Mobile Fidelity’s UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) reduces the classic five electroforming steps to just three, bringing the record significantly closer to the original mastering lacquer. And 45-RPM editions —often released as a double LP spread across two discs—offer finer resolution, greater dynamic range, and less distortion in the inner grooves thanks to the higher groove speed.

Analogue Productions

UHQR & Atlantic 75 Series

200g Clarity vinyl, pressed at Quality Record Pressings (QRP) in Salina, Kansas. Mastered by Bernie Grundman or Ryan K. Smith, always AAA from the original analog master.

Label by Chad Kassem
Mobile Fidelity

UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S)

One-Step process with only three electroforming steps instead of five, often released as a 45-RPM 2LP set. SuperVinyl, strictly limited and numbered—the uncompromising reference edition.

MoFi Sound Lab, Sebastopol, USA
Speakers Corner

Classical & Jazz Classics

Kai Seemann’s German reissue label presses 180g vinyl at Pallas, exclusively AAA from the original analog masters. Focus: Classical (DGG, Decca, RCA) and Blue Note Jazz.

Mastering, pressing, quality: the three pillars of a great pressing

The journey from the original master tape to the finished vinyl record involves dozens of critical steps—and every single one influences the final sound. Mastering determines how the sound is shaped for the record: level, dynamics, EQ, and stereo image. Renowned mastering engineers such as Bernie Grundman, Kevin Gray (Coherent Audio), Ryan K. Smith (Sterling Sound), Bob Ludwig, and Chris Bellman have spent decades developing an ear for the unique characteristics of the medium and work with meticulous precision.

During the subsequent cutting process, the audio information is transferred to a lacquer disc—using modern Neumann VMS-70 or VMS-80 cutting machines. Half-speed mastering is performed at half the standard record speed (16⅔ instead of 33⅓ RPM), which gives the cutting stylus twice as much time for precise high-frequency reproduction. The pressing itself takes place at a handful of specialized pressing plants: Quality Record Pressings (QRP) in Kansas, Pallas in Germany, Optimal in Röbel, and Record Technology Inc. (RTI) in California—plants that produce a few hundred records per hour instead of thousands.

A look at the most important labels and series

Alongside big names like Analogue Productions and Mobile Fidelity, a diverse landscape of audiophile reissue labels has emerged. California-based Impex Records produces meticulously curated jazz and rock classics, mastered by Kevin Gray. Pure Pleasure from the UK specializes in jazz rarities, pressed by Pallas. ORG Music, Craft Recordings (Concord’s reissue division), and the Japanese labels Esoteric and Stereo Sound Reference Record round out the spectrum.

Particularly noteworthy are the major official series: Blue Note’s Tone Poet Series, curated by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray, presses the most important Blue Note albums using the AAA process on 180g vinyl. The Blue Note Classic Series is dedicated to commercially significant titles at an affordable price. In the classical music sector, Esoteric from Japan releases SACDs and vinyl editions of legendary DGG and Decca recordings in exceptional quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Collectors Should Know About Audiophile Records

What Makes a Record Audiophile-Grade?

An audiophile vinyl record is characterized by the highest-quality source material (ideally the original analog master tape), meticulous mastering by renowned engineers, heavyweight premium vinyl (180g or 200g), and pressing at specialized facilities. These are often accompanied by a limited edition, numbered pressings, and particularly elaborate sleeve designs. The goal is to bring the recording to the turntable as faithfully as possible—with greater detail, higher dynamic range, and less background noise than standard pressings.

What is the difference between 180g and 200g vinyl?

The 20-gram difference in weight may seem small, but it has technical implications. Today, 180g vinyl is the de facto standard for audiophile pressings and offers greater stability, less resonance, and longer durability than the 120–140g used in standard pressings. 200g pressings—such as those used in Analogue Productions’ UHQR editions—often utilize special vinyl grades like Clarity Vinyl or SuperVinyl, which play even more cleanly and quietly. Important: Weight alone does not make a good record—the quality of the vinyl granules, the precision of the pressing, and the mastering are what matter most.

Why are audiophile albums often pressed at 45 RPM?

At 45 RPM (revolutions per minute), the groove passes the cartridge faster than at 33⅓ RPM—this means more groove length per second and thus finer resolution of details and higher frequencies. Additionally, so-called inner groove distortion at the end of a record side is reduced. The downside: a 45-RPM side holds less music, which is why audiophile albums are usually released as 2LP box sets. The sonic benefit is clearly audible on high-quality systems—more air, better dynamics, and more precise vocals.

What does AAA (All-Analogue) mean?

AAA stands for “All-Analogue” and means that the entire production chain—from recording and mastering to cutting the lacquer disc and pressing—is carried out exclusively in analog. No digital intermediate steps, no intermediate submaster in digital form. For modern reissues, this is technically challenging because it requires intact original master tapes and specialized mastering studios. AAA pressings such as Analogue Productions’ UHQR, MoFi’s One-Step, or the Speakers Corner Classical series are considered the gold standard among audiophiles.

What is half-speed mastering?

In half-speed mastering, the source tape runs at half speed while the lacquer disc is being cut—and the cutting machine also rotates at half speed, i.e., at 16⅔ instead of 33⅓ RPM. This gives the cutting stylus twice as much time to precisely transfer high frequencies into the groove. The result is finer highs, cleaner transients, and significantly more detail in complex musical passages. Well-known half-speed mastering engineers include Miles Showell (Abbey Road Studios) and Sean Magee.

What is a UHQR pressing?

UHQR (Ultra High Quality Record) is the most uncompromising pressing quality produced by Analogue Productions. It is based on 200g Clarity Vinyl—a particularly pure, flat vinyl granulate without the usual carbon black additives. Pressing takes place at the in-house facility Quality Record Pressings (QRP) in Salina, Kansas, using an extended cooling phase and specially adapted molds. Each UHQR is numbered, features elaborate packaging, and is typically limited to a few thousand copies. Prices range from 125 to 250 euros, and can be significantly higher for some special editions.

What is a one-step pressing?

In the classic vinyl record production process, five electroforming steps are carried out between the lacquer disc and the finished pressing matrix: master – master cylinder – stamper – blank. Theoretically, each step results in a minimal loss of information. In a one-step pressing, two of these steps are eliminated—the stamper is taken directly from the father. The result is a more sonically detailed and lively pressing, though this process leads to greater tool wear and, consequently, strictly limited production runs. Mobile Fidelity’s UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) is the best-known one-step program on the market.

Which pressing plants are considered the top choices for audiophiles?

The most important specialized pressing plants for audiophile records are Quality Record Pressings (QRP) in Salina, Kansas (part of Analogue Productions), Pallas GmbH in Diepholz, Germany; Optimal Media in Röbel, Germany; Record Technology Inc. (RTI) in Camarillo, California; and Third Man Pressing in Detroit. They differ from mass production in that they have shorter pressing cycles, more meticulous quality control, higher-quality vinyl raw materials, and lower quantities per stamper. The result is flatter, quieter, and sonically more consistent pressings.

Who are the most well-known mastering engineers?

Among the most influential mastering engineers for audiophile vinyl pressings are Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles), Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio, California), Ryan K. Smith (Sterling Sound, New York/Nashville), Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering, Maine—now retired), Chris Bellman (Bernie Grundman Mastering), Steve Hoffman (known for his Audio Fidelity Gold CDs and DCC Compact Classics), as well as Miles Showell and Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios for half-speed mastering. Seeing their names on a record is a guarantee of quality.

How do you properly care for and store audiophile records?

Audiophile records should be stored upright, never on their sides (warping) and not at an angle (cupping). Use antistatic inner sleeves made of MoFi or Nagaoka paper instead of the often rough original sleeves. Use a carbon-fiber brush before each playthrough, and wet-clean the records approximately every 20–30 playthroughs using a record cleaning machine (Pro-Ject VC-S3, Clearaudio Double Matrix, Degritter). The room temperature should remain constant at 18–22 °C; avoid direct sunlight and high humidity. You can find care products in our Audio Accessories category.
