Why second-hand vinyl is so special

Second-hand records are more than a cheaper alternative to new ones. Many titles have been out of print for decades and are only available as original pressings – some recordings can only be found second-hand.

Then there’s the sound: original pressings were often cut directly from master tapes that were fresh at the time. Well preserved and carefully cleaned, they delight collectors with an immediacy many reissues strive for.

And last but not least, every record holds a piece of history – from cover design and inserts to the marks of its time. Buying second-hand vinyl also gives it a second life.

02 · Guidance

Understanding condition grades

The record trade has adopted a grading scale based on the Goldmine standard. It describes the condition of record and sleeve separately:

Grade	Meaning	Sound & appearance
M – Mint	as new	unplayed or as new, no marks at all
NM – Near Mint	nearly new	barely visible marks, flawless playback
VG+ – Very Good Plus	very good	light signs of use, barely audible
VG – Very Good	good	visible marks, light crackle in quiet passages
G – Good	used	clear marks and surface noise, but plays through
F / P – Fair / Poor	heavily used	more of a collector’s or filler copy

04 · Care & service

How to keep your find in top shape

New inner sleeve. Old paper sleeves shed dust and fibres – an anti-static inner sleeve protects the freshly cleaned groove.

Protect the sleeve. A plastic outer sleeve protects the original cover from edge wear and ring wear.

Store upright. Keep records upright, cool and dry – don’t stack them or leave them in the sun.

Clean stylus. A regularly cleaned stylus and correctly set tracking force are especially kind to older pressings.

Frequently asked questions about second-hand records

What is a second-hand record shop?

A second-hand record shop sells pre-owned records – from sought-after original pressings and rarities to classics of past decades. At Klangheimat, every record is cleaned, checked and prepared for its new owner before sale.

What condition are the second-hand records in?

We clean and check every record before it goes on sale. You’ll find the condition of record and sleeve in each product description – so you know exactly what to expect before you buy.

What do grades like NM or VG+ mean?

The record trade uses a scale based on the Goldmine standard: M (Mint) means as new, NM (Near Mint) nearly new, VG+ (Very Good Plus) light signs of use with very good sound, VG (Very Good) audible but not distracting marks. G (Good) and below describe clearly used copies.

Do second-hand records sound worse than new ones?

Not necessarily. Well-preserved, cleaned second-hand records often sound excellent – some original pressings are even considered sonically outstanding because they were cut directly from master tapes that were fresh at the time. Care and condition are what matter.

How can I identify a first pressing?

The main clues are the matrix numbers in the run-out groove, the label design, the catalogue number and details on the front and back cover. As pressings often differ only in small details, it’s worth checking discography databases.

Do I need to clean second-hand records before playing them?

Our second-hand records have already been cleaned. For pre-owned records from other sources, a thorough wash before the first play is always advisable – dust and residue in the groove cost sound quality and strain the stylus. If you don’t have your own record cleaning machine, our record cleaning service will do it for you.

Can warped records be saved?

Slightly warped or wavy records can often be gently flattened – using controlled heat and even pressure. Severely warped records, on the other hand, often cannot be saved. We’re happy to check whether a record can be flattened as part of our record flattening service.

Can a second-hand record damage my stylus?

Very dirty records can wear the stylus faster. Cleaned and checked records are perfectly safe – and as with any record, a clean stylus and correctly set tracking force protect both groove and cartridge.

Why is second-hand vinyl sustainable?

Every second-hand record that finds a new home gets a second life – with no new production. This way you combine musical enjoyment with a mindful use of resources.
