Audiophile pressings

45 RPM pressings – maximum fidelity on vinyl

More groove per second – more music in every detail.

Records cut at 45 revolutions per minute are regarded as the reference format for audiophile music lovers. Because the record spins faster, every second of music is spread over a considerably longer stretch of groove. This lets the stylus trace the finest details more precisely – the sound becomes noticeably more detailed, clearer and more spacious, especially with jazz, classical and acoustic music.

45 RPM
At a glance

Advantages of 45 RPM vinyl

Higher resolution & dynamics
Around 35 % higher groove speed than at 33⅓ rpm – more room for fine detail and transients.
More depth & soundstage
Instruments stand out more clearly in space, while reverb tails and decays are preserved for longer.
As a 2LP or 4LP set
Shorter sides mean more headroom for level and bass – with no compromises in the cut.
For precise tracking
Ideal for high-quality hi-fi systems with a carefully aligned cartridge.
01 · The technology behind it

Why 45 rpm carries more sound

The key factor is groove speed – how fast the groove passes beneath the stylus. At 45 rpm it is around 35 % higher than at 33⅓ rpm. Every oscillation of the music signal is therefore “spread out” over more groove length. High frequencies don’t have to be cut as tightly, and the stylus can follow them more precisely.

This is especially audible towards the end of a side: towards the centre the groove circumference gets smaller and the speed drops – at 33⅓ rpm, tracing distortion and treble losses increase there. A 45 rpm pressing still has as much reserve on the inner grooves as a 33 does further out.

There is also more latitude in the cut: because each side is shorter, the mastering engineer can cut higher levels and wider bass excursions. The result is more dynamics, a quieter background and a more stable, deeper soundstage.

02 · Comparison

33⅓ rpm and 45 rpm compared

12″ LP 33⅓ rpm 45 rpm
Groove speed, outer edge approx. 51 cm/s approx. 69 cm/s
Groove speed, inner edge approx. 21 cm/s approx. 28 cm/s
Playing time per side approx. 18–25 min approx. 12–15 min
Typical album format 1 LP 2 or 4 LPs
Treble & inner grooves good, decreasing towards the centre very good, stable on the inner grooves too
Side changes less frequent more frequent – focused listening

Guide values for 12″ records. How good a pressing sounds always depends on the recording, mastering and pressing plant as well.

03 · Repertoire

Typical genres & labels

45 rpm pressings show their strengths above all where naturalness matters: in jazz, classical and acoustic music, but also in blues, singer-songwriter and well-produced rock. The leading audiophile labels use the format specifically for their reference editions:

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab
Known for the Original Master Recording series and the UltraDisc One-Step editions at 45 rpm – with a shortened manufacturing process for maximum fidelity.
Analogue Productions
Reference reissues of jazz, blues and classical music, many of them as 45 rpm sets, pressed at Quality Record Pressings.
Music Matters
Acclaimed Blue Note reissues, originally released as a 2LP series at 45 rpm, with lovingly designed gatefold sleeves.
ORG Music & Impex
Audiophile reissues of classics across all genres – often in 45 rpm format and with meticulous mastering.
04 · Target audience

Who is 45 rpm for?

These editions are aimed at listeners seeking the utmost in sonic precision – whether on high-end systems or well-balanced mid-range systems with good alignment. Perfect for intensive listening sessions focused on transparency, depth and fine detail.

You’ll hear the biggest difference on recordings you know well: compare a favourite record on 33⅓ with its 45 rpm edition – cymbals, vocals and room ambience usually reveal the difference within a few bars.
05 · In practice

How to get the best from your 45 rpm pressing

1
Switch the speed. Using a switch or button – on many belt-drive turntables, the belt is moved to the larger step of the motor pulley.
2
Check the speed. Use a strobe disc or test record to check that the platter turns at exactly 45 rpm – even small deviations change pitch and timing.
3
Align the cartridge. Set tracking force, anti-skating and azimuth carefully – the finer groove modulation rewards precise tracking.
4
Look after your records. Clean grooves are the foundation: thorough record cleaning and anti-static inner sleeves preserve sound quality for the long term.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about 45 rpm records

Do 45 rpm records really sound better?
With the same recording and mastering, generally yes: the higher groove speed delivers more resolution, better treble and more dynamics – especially on the inner grooves. How good a record ultimately sounds always depends on the source, mastering and pressing quality as well.
Why are 45 rpm albums spread across two or four LPs?
At 45 rpm only about 12 to 15 minutes of music fit on one side. A complete album is therefore usually spread across two LPs, longer works across four.
Can every turntable play 45 rpm?
Almost all turntables can play at 45 rpm. Some models switch at the push of a button; on others, the drive belt is moved to the second step of the pulley. A look at the user manual will help.
What happens if I play a 45 at 33⅓ rpm?
The music runs too slowly and sounds far too low. It does no harm to the record – simply switch to 45 rpm and start again.
How does it differ from a classic 7″ single?
Singles traditionally play at 45 rpm too, but they are smaller and usually carry only one or two tracks per side. Audiophile 45 rpm pressings, by contrast, are 12″ LPs with a full album, using the faster format specifically for better sound quality.
Do I need a high-end system for 45 rpm pressings?
No. Even a well-matched mid-range system with a carefully aligned cartridge clearly shows the benefits. The better the turntable and system, the more detail you will hear.
What does “One-Step” mean for 45 rpm pressings?
In the One-Step process, records are pressed directly from the first metal part instead of going through the usual intermediate stages. This reduces generational losses and noise – but only limited runs are possible as a result.
How can I tell that a record plays at 45 rpm?
The speed is printed on the cover, the hype sticker or the label, usually as “45 RPM”. At Klangheimat you will also find it in every product description.
