Impulses!
Anyone who thinks of John Coltrane must inevitably associate his thoughts with Impulse Records.
Producer Creed Taylor, who was employed by ABC-Paramount at the time, set up the new Impulse! label in 1960 with the permission of ABC, which specialized purely in jazz.
He also came up with the slogan "The New Wave In Jazz". Many of the most innovative and fascinating artists in jazz were able to realize themselves through Impulse! without the usual commercial constraints.
In most cases, the colors of the covers were limited to black and orange in combination with a third color, making them extremely striking in appearance. The gatefold covers gave them an unmistakable and exclusive character.
Impulse! was definitely one of the most important labels in the 1960s.
Other jazz giants such as Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus and Art Blakey could be found on Impulse!
Above all, of course, the work of John Coltrane stood in the foreground, who developed into Impulse's driving force par excellence.
Bob Thiele, a producer, and sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder had a lasting influence on the label's style until 1969, after they were hired by ABC-Paramount.
Other producers followed before the label ended its work in 1977 with the two albums Byablue by Keith Jarret and First Meditations by John Coltrane and Change, Change, Change - Live At The Roxy by Les McCann.
A brief revival followed under MCA in the mid-1980s before Tommy LiPuma reactivated it completely in 1995.
During this time, numerous high-quality reissues were produced, which cut an excellent figure, especially in the vinyl version.
But not only the "old" was reissued. Current artists are also releasing their albums under the reactivated Impuse! label. These include Diana Krall, Donald Harrison, Eric Reed and Horace Silver
