Nagaoka MP-700 - Japan's new reference piece for analog perfection

The most important information at a glance:

  • 15 years of development have resulted in Nagaoka's finest moving-permalloy cartridge.
  • Micro-ridge diamond (0.12 × 0.3 mil) and boron stylus enable extreme precision.
  • The MP-700 is MM-compatible, but offers near-MC resolution.
  • Three-layer refined ultra-duralumin housing minimizes resonances.
  • Soft damper + stabilizing suspension wire ensure controlled needle guidance.

Introduction - When Japanese engineering becomes sound 🎧

There are hi-fi products that sound - and those that say something about music. The Nagaoka MP-700 undoubtedly belongs to the second category. After more than 15 years of development work, the long-established Japanese manufacturer is launching a new flagship onto the market for the first time, and the audiophile world is reacting with precisely the mixture of amazement and fascination that is only known from moments of genuine innovation.

Nagaoka is not a company that presents a new series every year. The brand works almost silently, almost monastically, in its workshops in Yamagata and concentrates on what it has been perfecting for decades: Scanning diamonds and the finest cartridge manufacturing. The MP-700 is the sum of this experience - a product that does not shout loudly, but convinces quietly. And this is precisely its strength.

Nagaoka - The inconspicuous giant from Yamagata 🗾

Although Nagaoka was long considered an insider tip in the Western market, it is a major global player in a tiny, highly specialized industry: scanning diamond manufacturing. According to the manufacturer, Nagaoka is one of the world's largest producers of polished diamond tips - a detail that forms the basis of its special sound signature.

Unlike many of its competitors, Nagaoka does not buy in any components. Every stone is cut in-house, every needle carrier is made in-house, every coating on the body is checked in-house. This complete vertical manufacturing not only results in greater precision, but also in a consistency that is rarely achieved in the world of high-end cartridges.

The fact that the MP-700 was honored with the EISA Award 2025-2026 is therefore less a surprise than a logical consequence. A product created with this level of detail is predestined to receive international recognition.

Moving Permalloy - a technology that can do more than MM and MC

Many audiophiles think in categories: Either MM - comfortable and loud - or MC - fine and detailed, but quiet and demanding. Nagaoka has been leaving this grid for years with its own technology: the Moving-Permalloy principle (MP).

Instead of a heavy magnet (as with MM) or fine coils (as with MC), the MP-700 only has a tiny piece of permalloy - an ultra-light mu-metal alloy - on the needle carrier. This microscopically small piece of metal moves in the magnetic field and induces the music signal.

The result is fascinating, both technically and musically:

- Extremely low moving mass: The diamond follows the record groove more freely, faster and more quietly.
- Precision of an MC system: Without its disadvantages such as 0.3-0.5 mV output voltage.
- MM convenience: The MP-700 delivers 4 mV and plays at any high-quality MM input.
- High channel separation: 30 dB at 1 kHz - a value that creates real spatial depth.

This symbiosis of MC finesse and MM comfort is the reason why many listeners say after the MP-700: "I hear more - without more effort."

Micro ridge diamond - 0.12 × 0.3 mil precision 💎

The scanning diamond is the heart of this system. For the MP-700, Nagaoka relies on a micro-ridge bare stone - one of the most complex and precise diamond shapes known to the industry. Measuring only 0.12 × 0.3 mil, it is in a range finer than a human hair.

The cut has flat, defined contact surfaces that exactly follow the geometry of modern grooves. This not only reduces wear, but also distortion at high frequencies. The diamond reaches deeper into the groove - and reveals micro details that remain hidden with elliptical or conical cuts.

Boron needle carrier - the fast track to the truth

The needle carrier is made of boron, one of the hardest and lightest materials available. A boron carrier delivers extremely high natural resonance and immediate responsiveness - two properties that transmit the finest movements in the groove without delay.

In practice, it sounds like this:

- Guitar strings have more grain.
- Voices sound more present because transients are not "swallowed up".
- Drum brushes sound finer, airier and more natural.

This ability to react quickly and in a controlled manner is the reason why the MP-700 never sounds "soft" despite its warm basic character.

The suspension - soft but stable: Nagaoka's technical masterpiece

One fascinating technical detail is the soft damper that Nagaoka developed especially for this model. It is the softest in the entire MP series - a design that would normally lead to instability.

But instead of shying away from the risk, Nagaoka developed a solution: a controlling suspension wire in the pivot point that stabilizes the movements of the needle carrier without limiting the sensitivity of the damper.

This combination results in

- better tracking in complex passages,
- better fine dynamics in the mid-range,
- clearer highs without harshness,
- less distortion at high levels.

It's one of those solutions that sounds simple, but only works in the hands of a manufacturer with years of experience in magnetics and materials science.

The housing - a triple-finished protective shield against resonances

The ultra-duraluminum housing of the MP-700 undergoes a three-stage surface process:

1. nickel coating for structural stability
2. black tin layer for conductivity and shielding
3. insulating protective layer against static charge

This unique combination fulfills several tasks:

- Reduction of electromagnetic interference
- Minimization of static charge
- Protection against corrosion and wear
- Fine, matt look - functional and aesthetic

The result is a housing that not only looks good, but also contributes to the extremely low noise floor that many listeners immediately notice with the MP-700.

The break-in phase - a cartridge that grows

Many systems change in the first few hours. With the MP-700, this change is exceptionally clear. Several test reports confirm a clear threefold division:

0 hours: The sound initially seems somewhat flat, controlled, restrained. The stage is clean, but not yet deep. Richness of detail is recognizable, but hidden.

After 20-30 hours: The pickup begins to breathe. Voices come to the fore, the treble range opens up. Fleet Foxes, Arctic Monkeys or classical jazz quartets gain body and precision.

After 100 hours: The final voice. Broad, deep, open, but never overdrawn. Complex orchestral pieces remain stable, even in dense passages. The dynamics are lively without being aggressive.

In practice: precise adjustment required

The MP-700 works with a recommended tracking force of 1.4 g - a value that is extremely record-friendly, but requires careful tonearm calibration. Particularly light arms sometimes require additional counterweight.

If you take this into account, you get a system that not only plays ideally in medium-heavy arms, but also unfolds the entire record collection with a new naturalness.

Availability, replacement needles & expert advice

Like many high-end products made by hand in Japan, the MP-700 is not available indefinitely. Delivery times of 1-3 weeks are normal - but justified in view of the precision. The matching JN-P700 replacement stylus will keep performance at the highest level for many years.

Klangheimat expressly recommends buying from specialized dealers, as the assembly and adjustment have a direct influence on the final sound quality. You can find more high-quality cartridges and accessories at: Klangheimat.de

Klangheimat - At the end of the groove

The Nagaoka MP-700 is not just any cartridge. It is the manifestation of what has characterized Japanese engineers for years: Precision, dedication, patience and a deep love of music. This system combines the transparency of an MC cartridge with the everyday usability of an MM system - creating a new category of its own.

Those who love music will not only hear sound here, but a new perspective: more depth, more texture, more truth. The MP-700 turns the groove not into a technical medium, but into a narrative space.
