Record Restore: Clean vinyl
down to the deepest groove
Less noise, more music - the cleaning system that removes dirt where sound quality really matters.
W ho loves records knows the ritual: take the record out of the sleeve, blow it out briefly, go over it with a velvet brush - and put the needle in the groove. But what feels like a flawless process can actually quietly sabotage the sound result. Because the crucial question is not whether your record looks like it's clean - but whether it is. Deep in the groove. Where the diamond actually reads music.
This is exactly where Record Restore comes in - a cleaning system from the UK that takes a fundamentally different approach: instead of liquid, which merely distributes impurities on the surface, Record Restore works with a temporary, completely removable cleaning layer that binds contaminants directly in the groove and removes them in a single stroke. No scrubbing, no machine, no residue.
We have included Record Restore in our range because we are convinced: For collectors who really want to get everything out of their records, there is hardly a more effective first step than consistent groove cleaning. And Record Restore delivers this step - controlled, repeatable and without the logistical effort of an ultrasonic system.
It sounds like a minor issue, but it's not. Optically flawless plates can carry oils, press residues, fingerprint residues and air particles deep in their grooves - embedded at the point where the scanning diamond makes its way. These microscopic deposits are invisible to the naked eye, but are clearly audible acoustically: as increased noise, reduced resolution, muffled highs and - in the long term - as wear on the stylus and groove.
If you don't clean at groove level, you'll never really hear your records.
Record Restore - product philosophyIn addition, there is static electricity: it acts like a magnet on dust and attracts new particles as soon as the record is removed from the sleeve. A vicious circle that can hardly be broken permanently with conventional cleaning methods. Record Restore addresses both problem levels simultaneously - mechanical and chemical - thanks to its unique formulation.
The cleaning solution is surfactant-based - a technical term used in surface chemistry for surface-active substances that reduce the surface tension of water and thus make it possible to dissolve and bind even deeply embedded contaminants. Crucial: no alcohol, no abrasives, no aggressive solvents. The formula has been explicitly developed for archive use and is therefore also suitable for precious items such as first pressings, colored vinyl or Shellac plates.
Base: Surfactant, alcohol-free
Method: Removable cleaning layer
Residue: None (completely removable)
Suitable for: Vinyl, Picture Discs, Shellac (78s)
Capacity: ~100 records in 5-6 h
The heart of Record Restore is its peel-off principle. Unlike wet cleaners, vacuum systems or ultrasonic baths, which all rely on rinsing or vacuuming dissolved contaminants from the groove, Record Restore takes a different approach: the cleaning solution is applied thinly to the record surface, dries to form a flexible, temporary layer - and is then completely stripped off in a single, even stroke. Contaminants are physically lifted out of the groove and leave the panel with the layer. Not rinsed, not thinned - removed.
1. application: The cleaning solution is applied evenly to the record surface using the tool supplied.
2. drying: The layer binds contaminants - even deep in the groove - while it hardens.
3. stripping: The finished coating is peeled off in one piece, taking all contaminants with it - leaving no residue.
The result is measurable. Users report up to 11 dB improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio and up to 8 dB reduction in the noise level - values that are considerable in the world of analog playback. What is more difficult to quantify, however, is the subjectively perceived return of clarity, separation and spatial depth. Sounds that were previously lost in the background noise come to the fore again. Strings separate from the orchestra. Bass lines gain contour.
One of the most frequent objections to liquid cleaning systems is the question of what remains in the groove after cleaning. Surfactant films, plasticizers from cleaning fluids or simply damp residues - all of these can affect the sound reproduction in the long term and even promote needle deposits. Record Restore addresses this problem constructively: the cleaning layer is formulated in such a way that no persistent substance remains in the groove. Any trace residues can be completely removed by brief contact with a light adhesive cleaner. The panel remains unchanged after treatment - only cleaner.
Ultrasonic devices are highly regarded in audiophile circles - and rightly so, as the process is effective. However, it involves logistical effort: set-up and insertion times, common cleaning baths that accumulate with each run, regular maintenance and, last but not least, acquisition costs in the four-digit range. For the occasional cleaner, this is disproportionate - and even for the experienced collector, the question of control over each individual plate arises.
Record Restore: 100 records in approx. 5-6 hours - set-up in 1-2 minutes - no shared bath - no maintenance required
Typical ultrasonic device: 100 plates in approx. 17 hours - time-consuming preparation - regular water changes - sources of error due to chemical variability and device calibration
Record Restore offers a remarkable alternative here: up to three times faster for real collection sizes, with a fully controllable process per plate. No bath contamination, no calibration issues, no reliance on machine maintenance. Anyone looking for a methodical, repeatable process that integrates into any listening room will find Record Restore a compelling answer.
Special care must be taken with first pressings, rare collector's items or colored special pressings. No cleaning process can forgive carelessness here. The formulation of Record Restore is explicitly suitable for archives: no alcohol, no abrasives, no aggressive solvents. Shellac records (78 rpm) are also addressed in a special variant - an area in which many cleaning systems fail or are simply not intended. Record Restore is designed for reuse and retains its properties over many cleaning cycles.
Record Restore is not a gadget or a luxury item - it is a well thought-out tool for people who understand that fidelity begins with care. The combination of cleaning depth, freedom from residue, time efficiency and safety for even the most delicate pressings makes it one of the most convincing arguments for a serious vinyl care routine. Every record has more to give. Record Restore helps you hear it.
