How do you set up a phono amplifier correctly?

Dec 11, 2024·Last update: Jul 25, 2025

Setting up a phono preamplifier correctly is crucial for optimum sound quality. The correct settings depend above all on the cartridge used (MM or MC), as this determines the electrical characteristics and requirements. Here is a detailed guide:

1. determine cartridge type (MM or MC)
  • MM (Moving Magnet):
    • Higher output voltage (2-7 mV).
    • Typically requires an input impedance of 47 kOhm and a capacitance of 100-300 pF.
  • MC (Moving Coil):
    • Lower output voltage (0.1-0.5 mV).
    • Requires a much lower input impedance, often 100 ohms or less (depending on the cartridge).

➡ Step: Check the technical data of the pickup (usually in the manual or online).

2. adjust capacitance and resistance (impedance)
  • Capacitance (pF):

    • This setting applies to MM cartridges.
    • The total capacitance includes:
      • The phono preamplifier (e.g. 100 pF).
      • The cable from the turntable (e.g. 120 pF).
    • Match the capacitance with the optimum range of the cartridge (e.g. 150-300 pF).
    • With MC cartridges, the capacitance is much less critical.
  • Resistance (ohms):

    • Resistance is critical for MC cartridges.
    • Usual values are 10-100 ohms, depending on the cartridge.
    • For MM cartridges, the resistance almost always remains at 47 kOhm.

➡ Step: Set the values on the preamplifier according to the specifications of your cartridge. Many preamplifiers have DIP switches or controls for adjustment.

3. adjust the amplification (gain)
  • The gain must be adjusted to the output voltage of the cartridge:
    • MM cartridge: 40-50 dB.
    • MC cartridge: 60-70 dB.

➡ Step: Adjust the gain value so that the volume level matches other sources (e.g. CD player) without distorting.

4 Test and fine tuning
  1. Connection: Connect the record player to the phono preamplifier and this to the amplifier.
  2. Test recording: Listen to a familiar record.
    • If the sound is "dull" or "sharp", adjust the capacitance or impedance.
    • If there is distortion, reduce the gain value.

5. optional: terminating resistor

With MC cartridges, you can experiment by using external resistors (e.g. 100 Ohm) if the preamplifier allows this. The terminating resistor influences the sound color.

Summary:
  • MM cartridges: 47 kOhm, 100-300 pF, gain 40-50 dB.
  • MC cartridge: 10-100 Ohm, capacitance less relevant, gain 60-70 dB.
  • Fine-tune by ear to achieve the best balance and sound quality.
