Which amplifier suits the Ruark Sabre-R?

Ruark recommends an amplifier power of 25 to 100 watts. With a nominal impedance of 6 ohms (minimum 4.2 ohms), the Sabre-R is an easy partner for almost any high-quality stereo integrated amplifier or receiver. With a sensitivity of 86 dB/W/m, moderate power is sufficient in typical living rooms. A little more headroom does no harm, however, if you like to listen loud and dynamically.

Is the Sabre-R designed to match the Ruark R610?

Yes, the Sabre-R was developed as the ideal complement to the Ruark R610 music system and matches it perfectly in looks, too. The R610 is available separately and is not included with the Sabre-R. Of course, the speaker can just as well be combined with any other high-quality hi-fi system.

What does bi-wiring offer, and do I need to use it?

The gold-plated bi-wire terminals let you connect the tweeter and woofer sections to the amplifier via separate cables. This can further improve fine detail and separation. It is not essential, though: in conventional single-wire mode, with one pair of cables per speaker, the Sabre-R performs just as convincingly.

How do I position the Sabre-R for best results?

Ideally, position the tweeters roughly at ear height, for example on speaker stands or a sideboard, and angle the speakers slightly towards the listening position. A little distance from the rear wall supports the bass reflex tuning and ensures clean, balanced bass. If you want more bass, move the speakers gradually closer to the wall.

What room size is the Sabre-R suited to?

With its compact dimensions of 290 × 175 × 215 mm and bass extending down to 50 Hz, the Sabre-R is particularly at home in small to medium-sized living rooms, studies and listening rooms. There it delivers a surprisingly full-bodied sound without visually dominating the space.

Which finishes is the Sabre-R available in?

The Sabre-R is available in warm walnut and in satin anthracite lacquer (matt black). Both versions are crafted to a standard otherwise found only on fine furniture. The magnetic grille can be removed at any time if you want the drivers on show.

Do I also need a subwoofer?

For the vast majority of music, no. Thanks to its long-throw woofer and bass reflex tuning, the Sabre-R reaches down to 50 Hz and delivers a solid, well-defined foundation. If you want to feel the very deepest bass in films or electronic music, you can extend the system at any time via an amplifier with a subwoofer output.

Hi-Fi Loudspeakers · Bookshelf Speakers

Some loudspeakers stay with their owners for a lifetime. At Ruark, that is no empty phrase: many music lovers still listen to the British manufacturer’s original Sabre speakers today. With the Ruark Sabre-R, the name returns as a compact 2-way bookshelf speaker that translates more than four decades of loudspeaker expertise into a contemporary design consistently built for longevity. A speaker made not for the next season, but for the next decades of music.

Inside, a carefully matched duo is at work: a 26 mm silk dome tweeter with neodymium magnet and a 150 mm long-throw woofer with treated fibre cone, housed in a braced and damped MDF cabinet with bass reflex tuning. The result is a natural, effortless sound that gives voices warmth and presence and breathes new life into every song. On the outside, the Sabre-R shows classic Ruark style: compact, calm in its lines and with a finish otherwise found only on fine furniture.

Sound & Technology

The silk dome is a deliberate choice for long, fatigue-free listening: it cleanly resolves fine details such as the decay of a cymbal or a singer’s breath, yet always remains silky and free of harshness. The neodymium magnet provides a powerful drive in a compact format. With a crossover frequency of 2.2 kHz, the tweeter takes over comparatively early, relieving the woofer in the presence region and ensuring a seamless transition between the two drivers. Voices and instruments sound all of a piece.

The foundation comes from the 150 mm long-throw woofer with a 30 mm voice coil. Its generous excursion lets the cone move more air than you would expect from a bookshelf speaker of this size. Together with the bass reflex tuning, the frequency response extends down to 50 Hz (±3 dB), enough for rich double bass lines, punchy kick drums and the full weight of an orchestra. The braced and damped MDF cabinet suppresses resonances, so the bass stays precise and well-defined instead of booming.

Craftsmanship & Design

Ruark was founded in south-east England in the mid-1980s and has since been known for audio products that give sound and living comfort equal weight. The Sabre-R continues this tradition: at just 29 cm tall, it blends unobtrusively into shelves, sideboards and wall units, adding understated elegance to classic and modern interiors alike. Two finishes are available: warm walnut and a restrained satin anthracite lacquer in matt black.

The magnetically attached grille needs no visible mounting holes and can be removed in one move, whether you want to protect the drivers or show them off as a technical detail. On the rear sit gold-plated bi-wire terminals. They allow either a conventional single-wire connection or separate cabling of the tweeter and woofer sections, for those who want to extract the last ounce of fine detail.

Placement & Pairing

The Sabre-R was developed as the ideal complement to the Ruark R610 music system, but is just as much at home with any other high-quality stereo amplifier. With a nominal impedance of 6 ohms (minimum 4.2 ohms) and a recommended amplifier power of 25 to 100 watts, it makes no special demands on the electronics. Compact integrated amplifiers and receivers drive it as confidently as larger power amplifiers.

The Sabre-R really comes into its own in small to medium-sized living spaces. For precise stereo imaging, position the tweeters roughly at ear height, for example on speaker stands or a sideboard, and angle the speakers slightly towards the listening position. A little distance from the rear wall helps the bass reflex tuning work cleanly and evenly. If you want more bass, move the speakers gradually closer to the wall.
