Blank cassettes: type I, II or IV?
Blank cassettes differ mainly in their tape type. Which one is right depends on your cassette deck – check the user manual or the tape type selector on the device.
| Tape type | Characteristics | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Type I (normal / ferric) | Warm, balanced sound, very versatile | Practically every cassette deck and Walkman |
| Type II (chrome / high bias) | Brighter treble, less hiss | Decks with type II (chrome) setting |
| Type IV (metal) | Highest headroom and dynamics | Only decks with metal support |
You’ll find our current selection in the category Blank cassettes.
Storing cassettes properly
Magnetic tape is sensitive to dust, heat and magnetic fields. With the right storage, your recordings will last for many years:
- —In a box, not loose: Storage boxes and cases protect against dust, light and pressure – and keep your collection organised.
- —Store upright: Store cassettes upright so the tape stays evenly wound on the reels.
- —Cool and dry: Away from radiators, direct sunlight and moisture.
- —Away from magnets: Speakers, power supplies and magnets can affect recordings.
Cleaning & demagnetising your deck
A clean cassette deck sounds better and is gentler on your tapes:
- —Clean the tape heads: Tape residue builds up on the head, capstan and pinch roller and dulls the treble. Regular cleaning keeps the sound fresh.
- —Care for the pinch roller: A clean pinch roller ensures even tape transport and prevents tangled tape.
- —Demagnetise: Over time, tape heads can become slightly magnetised. A demagnetiser prevents hiss and loss of treble.

Frequently asked questions about cassette accessories
Which blank cassette suits my cassette deck?
Type I works in practically every device. For type II (chrome) or type IV (metal), your deck must support that tape type – check the manual or the device itself.
How often should I clean the tape head?
With regular use, cleaning roughly every 20 to 30 hours of operation is recommended – at the latest when the treble starts to sound dull.
When should I demagnetise the tape heads?
Occasionally – especially if hiss increases or the treble fades despite clean heads. Switch the device off and keep cassettes away while doing so.
How do I store cassettes properly?
Upright in a box or case, cool and dry, out of direct sunlight and away from magnets and speakers.
