Audio fuses & circuit breakers – power with a higher standard
The smallest component in your system’s power path.
In hi-fi systems, the quality of the power supply plays a central role. Our audiophile fuses and circuit breakers reliably protect your equipment against electrical damage – and for many listeners they are a fine tuning tool for more dynamics, finer detail and calm in the sound.

At a glance
In the power path
A device’s entire current flows through its fuse – it is part of the power supply.
High-quality materials
Audiophile fuses rely on selected conductors, contacts and end caps.
Same protection
With identical rated current and the same characteristic, the protective function is fully retained.
Easy tuning
Device fuses can often be changed without tools – an affordable entry into mains tuning.
01
Why the fuse in a hi-fi device matters
Every power supply in your system – from the turntable through the streamer to the power amplifier – draws all its current through a device fuse. It is therefore a component in the power path through which every ampere flows that later becomes music. Standard fuses are optimised for protection and low cost, not for transmission quality.
Audiophile fuses fulfil the same protective function, but rely on selected conductor materials, high-quality end caps – often gold- or silver-plated – and careful workmanship. Many listeners report more dynamics, finer resolution and a quieter, blacker background after the swap. How clear the difference is depends on the device, the system and your listening habits – it is best to try it on the component that matters most to you.
The same applies one step earlier in the house wiring: hi-fi circuit breakers for the consumer unit replace the standard circuit breaker of the circuit your system is connected to – for many, the logical first step towards a clean power supply.
02
Fuse or circuit breaker?
Audio fuses are available for two points in the power path: as a fuse directly in the device and as a circuit breaker in the consumer unit. Both can also be combined – the circuit breaker serves the whole hi-fi circuit, the fuse each individual device.
Fuse 5 × 20 mm
The most common device fuse in hi-fi components – often in the IEC inlet or on the power supply board.
Strengths
Easy to change, wide choice of ratings
Typical use
Amplifiers, source components, power supplies
Fuse 6.3 × 32 mm
Larger format, mainly in American and British equipment and in power amplifiers with high current demand.
Strengths
Higher rated currents, robust design
Typical use
Powerful power amplifiers, imported equipment
Hi-fi circuit breaker
Audiophile circuit breaker for the consumer unit, fitted in the circuit of the hi-fi system.
Strengths
Acts on the system’s entire circuit
Typical use
Dedicated hi-fi circuits, mains tuning at the source

How to find the right fuse
Changing a device fuse is quick – as long as the ratings are right. These five steps lead to the right audio fuse:
Read the rating of the original fuse
The details are on the fuse’s end cap, next to the fuse holder or in the manual. Always unplug the mains lead before opening the fuse holder.
How to read the marking
Example: fuse “T 3.15 A L 250 V” – all four values should match on the replacement fuse.
T
Characteristic
T = time-delay, F = fast-acting
3.15 A
Rated current
must match exactly
L
Breaking capacity
L = low, H = high
250 V
Rated voltage
at least mains voltage
Keep the characteristic
A time-delay fuse (T) tolerates the high inrush current of power supplies, a fast-acting fuse (F) blows sooner. Always replace like with like – otherwise the fuse blows when switching on or no longer protects properly.
Check the size
Measure the fuse: 5 × 20 mm and 6.3 × 32 mm are the most common. The replacement fuse must sit cleanly and firmly in the holder.
Try the orientation
Some manufacturers of audiophile fuses recommend a mounting direction. Listen for yourself: try both directions and decide by ear.
Allow for running-in
Many manufacturers recommend giving new fuses a few days of use before you judge. Then compare at leisure with music you know well.

Safety first
- Never use a higher rating. Rated current, characteristic, breaking capacity and voltage must match the original fuse – a fuse that is too strong no longer protects the device and the wiring.
- Always work with the power disconnected. Unplug the mains lead before replacing the fuse. If the fuse sits inside the device, the replacement should be done by a qualified service workshop.
- Circuit breakers by an electrician only. Work on the consumer unit may only be carried out by a qualified electrician.
- If a fuse blows repeatedly, there is usually a fault. Have the device checked rather than fitting a stronger fuse.

Frequently asked questions about audio fuses
Do audiophile fuses really change the sound?
Many listeners report more dynamics, calm and finer detail after the swap. How clear the difference is depends on the device, the system and your ears. It is best to test on the component that matters most to you.
May I fit a fuse with a higher rating?
No. The replacement fuse must match the original in rated current, characteristic, breaking capacity and voltage. A higher rating cancels the protective function and can lead to damage or fire in the event of a fault.
What do time-delay (T) and fast-acting (F) mean?
Time-delay fuses briefly tolerate high inrush currents, such as those of power supplies with large capacitors. Fast-acting fuses blow sooner. Always use the characteristic of the original fuse.
What size is the fuse in my device?
The most common are 5 × 20 mm fuses; American and British equipment often uses 6.3 × 32 mm. You will find the details on the fuse, on the device or in the manual.
Does the orientation matter?
Some manufacturers of audiophile fuses specify a direction. Electrically, the fuse protects equally in both directions. Try both directions and decide by ear.
Do new fuses need running-in?
Many manufacturers recommend a few days of use before judging the sound. Then compare with recordings you know well.
Can I install a hi-fi circuit breaker myself?
No. Work on the consumer unit may only be carried out by a qualified electrician. Your electrician will fit the circuit breaker with the right rated current and tripping characteristic.
What should I do if the fuse keeps blowing?
Then there is usually a fault in the device or a wrong fuse rating. Do not fit a stronger fuse – have the device checked by a qualified service workshop.
Small component, fine difference
A good system starts with the power. With audiophile fuses and circuit breakers you optimise your hi-fi chain’s power path at the very point where each component draws its energy – safely, discreetly and with an eye on more calm and dynamics in the sound.
