FORMULA
1 - Last Factory - Power Cleaner - Sound plate deep cleaner

Every record has carried a problem with it since its birth: the so-called mold release - a release wax residue from the pressing process that adheres stickily to the groove wall and, over time, turns into a collection base for dust particles, oils and organic compounds. Conventional water or alcohol-based cleaners do not dissolve this residue - it remains, binds further dirt and is rubbed deeper into the groove each time the stylus is played. This leads to increased surface noise, distortion and accelerated groove wear. The Last Factory FORMULA 1 Power Cleaner was developed precisely for this problem: a highly active deep-cleaning formula that starts where regular cleaners stop.

The Last Factory, operating for over 45 years in Livermore, California, has designed its Power Cleaner as the first step in a consistent vinyl care program. The concept is clear: first deep clean, then preserve. Only a groove that is free of pressing residues and embedded contaminants can really benefit from the subsequent treatment with FORMULA 2 Record Preservative - and be permanently maintained at the sound level of a new record. Stereophile honored the Power Cleaner 2025 with the coveted Recommended Component Award.

The pressing process for vinyl records leaves what is known as a mold release on each record - a release agent that enables the record to be separated from the matrix during pressing. This material is sticky by nature, adheres deeply to the microstructures of the groove surface and attracts dust, fingerprints and air particles like a magnet. Aqueous cleaners and alcohol mixtures are chemically incapable of dissolving these firmly bound compounds - they clean the visible surface but leave the basic contaminant untouched. Each time the needle is played, this invisible film of dirt is rubbed into the groove structure, leading to measurable degradation of the groove and needle.

FORMULA 1 uses a highly active formula that specifically targets these chemically resistant press residues. A single treatment is sufficient to completely remove mold release and other firmly bonded contaminants from the groove - the effect is permanent, as the Power Cleaner removes the source of the problem and not just its surface manifestations. FORMULA 1 is often the only solution to restore the original sound of a record, especially in the case of used records from flea markets or estates, where unknown cleaning agent residues from past treatments may be embedded in the groove.

The sonic effect of a record deep-cleaned with FORMULA 1 is immediate and impressive: the background noise decreases noticeably, the sound opens up in depth and spatiality, and distortion - especially in complex passages with many simultaneous instruments - largely disappears. Vinyl enthusiasts often describe that used vinyls sound as if they were being played for the first time after a FORMULA 1 treatment. Music Direct sums it up aptly: The agent safely washes away stubborn deposits while reducing noise, distortion and groove wear at the same time.

The application is simple and designed for manual use without a machine: Apply three drops of FORMULA 1 to the enclosed fine velour applicator, spread the liquid evenly on the applicator and wipe the panel twice in a circular motion along the grooves. If the plate is very dirty, dust off the applicator on the ribbed bottle cap after each quarter turn. The formula evaporates completely without leaving any residue - no rinsing, no waiting to dry. Note: FORMULA 1 is suitable for vinyl LPs and 78s, not for shellac records.

FORMULA 1 is designed as a one-off initial step for every new record added to the collection - whether a new purchase or a second-hand find. FORMULA 3 (All-Purpose Cleaner) then takes over the routine cleaning before each play. Sealing with FORMULA 2 Record Preservative provides the final protection: it penetrates ten to fifteen molecular layers deep into the groove surface and forms a protective layer that permanently prevents shock wave wear from the stylus - for at least 200 plays. This three-stage process results in one of the most effective and scientifically proven vinyl care solutions on the market.
