Turntable accessories - Headshell - High-End
A headshell at this level is no longer an accessory - it is a component. The Ortofon LH-9000 combines three materials that are known in the high-precision mechanics and audiophile world for their exceptional acoustic properties: milled magnesium as the basic supporting element, carbon fiber composite material as the resonance-reducing functional element and Urushi lacquer as the final mechanical damping layer. The result is a headshell that not only minimizes vibrations, but actively counteracts them on three independent levels - tailored to the most demanding MC cartridges Ortofon has ever built.
The LH-9000 has been consistently developed as a reference headshell for the Cadenza series, the MC A95, the MC Anna Diamond and the MC Windfeld Ti - cartridges that play in the four-digit and five-digit price segments and whose performance depends directly on how precise and resonance-free the mechanical connection to the tonearm is. A headshell at this level of development is not an excessive investment - it is the logical consequence if you don't want to leave the full potential of a top pickup on the table.
Magnesium + carbon
Two materials, two levels of effectiveness - milled magnesium supports, carbon fiber element dampens natural resonances
Urushi lacquer finish
Traditional Japanese natural lacquer hardens and permanently changes the resonance behavior for the better
OFC + gold plating
High-purity oxygen-free copper with hard gold-plated contacts - consistent down to the last detail
Three materials, one goal
Magnesium is the lightest of all construction metals and has a very high specific rigidity - a decisive advantage over aluminum: same precision, lower weight, more favorable damping behavior with high-frequency vibrations. The combination of high internal damping and high bending stiffness makes magnesium the preferred material for tonearms of the highest quality - and consequently also for the headshell that connects the cartridge to the tonearm.
The additional carbon fiber element intervenes where magnesium alone reaches its limits: Carbon fiber composites have an extremely high stiffness combined with a pronounced ability to convert mechanical vibration energy into heat. Structural resonances that are still transmitted by the milled magnesium part are absorbed by the carbon element - the LH-9000 thus works as an active damping system instead of a passive signal transmission channel.
The Urushi lacquer finish adds a third, fascinating layer. Urushi - the natural lacquer made from the sap of the Japanese Urushi tree - is applied in several thin layers and hardens over time. This permanently changes the resonance behavior of the base material: the lacquer layer becomes denser and firmer, the mechanical coupling between the lacquer and the substrate increases and the natural resonances of the cabinet shift to a non-critical range. This principle is known from Japanese high-end pickup construction, where Urushi lacquers on legendary systems such as Koetsu and Etsuro Urushi are responsible for a sound that improves even further with increasing age of the instrument. Ortofon consistently applies this concept to the LH-9000.
On the signal side, Ortofon uses high-purity OFC copper with hard gold-plated contacts for the LH-9000 - the same consistent approach as for the entire signal path: no contact resistance, no oxidation, no signal distortion between cartridge and phono preamp. The color coding follows the Ortofon standard: red/green for the right channel (signal/ground), white/blue for the left channel. The tried-and-tested installation advice also applies here: connect the cables to the headshell before mounting the cartridge, as the contact pins of the Ortofon cartridges (1.2 mm) are slightly larger than the terminals of the headshell (1.0 mm) and sufficient freedom of movement is required for the clamping process.
Classification & compatibility
With SME connection and ½-inch standard mounting, the LH-9000 fits the vast majority of all high-quality tonearms. The mounting distance of 38.1 to 44.9 mm reliably covers common cartridge geometries and allows precise adjustment. The weight of 18.3 g must be taken into account when setting up the system: The combination with heavy MC systems such as the MC Anna Diamond or MC A95 requires an appropriately dimensioned counterweight on the tonearm - a look at the specifications of the existing arm is recommended before purchasing.
In the Ortofon range, the LH-9000 is at the top of the headshell family and is designed as a natural partner for the Cadenza, MC-A and MC-Diamond series. If you are using a top Ortofon pickup and not yet an LH-9000, you have not yet gotten the best sound from your system.
