How do I tell whether my turntable has an inverted bearing?

Remove the platter or sub-platter and look at the spindle. If it points downwards into a well in the plinth, you have a conventional, non-inverted bearing — exactly what Lube it is made for. If instead the spindle stands fixed and upright out of the plinth, with the bearing well sitting upside down in the sub-platter, the bearing is inverted and requires Pro-Ject Grease it. Within the Pro-Ject range this applies to the RPM series, the Xtension models and the Signature Line.

How often should the bearing oil be renewed?

There is no fixed interval, because oil consumption depends on running hours, room climate, humidity and platter mass. Rather than a rigid schedule, the sensible principle is to keep the bearing permanently lubricated. In practice an annual visual check works well: remove the platter and inspect the spindle. If the film looks thin, has darkened noticeably, or the spindle appears dull rather than wetted, it is time for a change.

How much oil should I use — can I use too much?

There is no official dosage recommendation, and no risk from over-application. A few drops in the bearing well are generally sufficient. If excess oil escapes as you reinsert the spindle, simply wipe it away — nothing more will happen. What matters more is the method: insert the spindle slowly so that trapped air can escape and the oil distributes evenly through the bearing clearance.

What is the step-by-step procedure for an oil change?

Switch the deck off and remove the platter, taking the belt off first on belt-driven models. Then clean the spindle and bearing well of old oil and metal particles with a lint-free cloth — this step matters more than the refill itself, because abrasive particles would otherwise keep working in the fresh oil. Add a few drops of Lube it to the well, insert the spindle slowly, refit the platter and turn it by hand for a few revolutions to distribute the film. Finally, refit the belt.

Could I use sewing machine oil or motor oil instead?

This is not advisable. Household and general-purpose oils are not matched to the viscosity requirements of a platter bearing and tend to oxidise and gum up over time. The result is a viscous film that creates noticeable breakaway torque, loads the belt drive and degrades speed stability. Penetrating sprays such as WD-40 are unsuitable in any case, being designed as solvents rather than lubricants. Lube it is formulated for precisely this application and does not gum up.

Is Lube it suitable for turntables from other manufacturers?

Pro-Ject specifies Lube it for its own models with non-inverted bearings. Technically it is a classic platter bearing oil that is in principle a candidate for comparable upright bearings from other brands — but the relevant manufacturer's specification always takes precedence. Some designs call for a particular viscosity, or use sintered bushes with their own requirements. When in doubt, consult the manual or simply ask us.

Is 5 ml really enough?

Yes — for many years. A platter bearing holds only a few drops, and the small applicator bottle is deliberately sized to cover numerous service intervals without oil sitting unused and ageing for decades. In numerical terms the contents amount to well over a hundred drops, which at annual servicing comfortably exceeds the working life of most turntables.

Turntable Care · Platter Bearing Oil

The platter bearing is the hardest-working and most frequently overlooked component in any turntable. It carries the entire mass of the platter, turns for a good twenty minutes without pause on every side played — and has to do so in complete silence and with unwavering consistency. Any disturbance in the bearing travels straight up the spindle into the platter, from there into the record, and finally into a stylus that resolves movements measured in micrometres. Pro-Ject Lube it is the specialist oil that keeps this critical interface in shape: a high-grade platter bearing oil that maintains the load-bearing film between spindle and bush, delivering quiet running, stable speed and a long bearing life.

Not all oils are equal. Lube it is formulated specifically for the demands of a platter bearing: according to the manufacturer it lubricates consistently across a very wide temperature range, protects against corrosion more effectively than conventional bearing oils and — the decisive factor over the long term — it does not gum up. This is exactly where improvised alternatives from the toolbox fail: they oxidise over time, thicken and form a sticky drag that loads the motor and degrades speed stability. Lube it stays thin — and the 5 ml precision bottle is so economical that a single bottle will realistically last many years.

Speed & Silence
A stable oil film lowers bearing rumble and keeps rotation constant
Never Gums Up
Stays thin over the long term — no sticky residue, no added drag
Non-Inverted Only
Debut, Essential, The Classic, X1/X2 & co. — inverted bearings need Grease it
Why the Bearing Decides the Sound

At heart, a platter bearing is a simple but exceptionally precise assembly: a hardened steel spindle running in a closely toleranced bush of bronze or polymer, resting at its base on a thrust pad or ball. Direct metal-to-metal contact between these surfaces must never occur — and the only thing preventing it is the oil film. It carries the load, centres the spindle and damps at the same time. When it is missing or exhausted, two audible problems arise: rumble, the low-frequency bearing noise that couples through the platter into the record and is tracked by the stylus as unwanted signal, and fluctuating friction, which shows up as wow and flutter.

Both are surprisingly easy to hear once you have made the comparison. A properly lubricated bearing sounds blacker behind the music: the space around instruments opens up because no low-level noise floor is masking the fine reverb tails. And sustained notes — piano, strings, woodwind, anything with a long steady-state component — sit more solidly, because the speed no longer drifts minutely around its nominal value. Running a bearing dry for years also risks mechanical damage: wear marks in the bush are irreversible and cannot be lubricated away afterwards.

There is a further, often underestimated effect: a free-running bearing takes load off the drive. The motor of a belt-driven deck works with very small forces, so any additional breakaway torque in the bearing translates into tension on the belt and therefore unrest at the platter. Fresh oil is, quite simply, the cheapest and most effective sonic upgrade any turntable owner can carry out.

Application & Intervals

How quickly the oil is consumed depends on far more than running hours: room climate, humidity, platter mass and location all play their part. No universally valid service interval can be derived from that in good conscience — so the practical rule is simply this: keep the bearing permanently lubricated, and check a little too early rather than too late. An annual inspection has proved a sensible benchmark, more often with heavy use. Regular playing is expressly good for the bearing, since it distributes the film evenly and prevents settling; it does, however, generate fine metal wear particles that collect in the oil — another reason to renew the oil from time to time rather than merely topping it up.

The procedure itself takes only minutes: remove the platter (or sub-platter), wipe old, darkened oil from the spindle and bearing well with a lint-free cloth, add a few drops of Lube it to the well and then reinsert the spindle slowly — this lets trapped air escape so the oil rises evenly through the bearing clearance. Then turn the platter by hand for a few revolutions to distribute the film. There is no precise dosage recommendation, and no risk in using too much: at worst a little oil escapes and needs wiping away.

Lube it or Grease it? The Bearing Question

Pro-Ject uses two fundamentally different bearing concepts across its range, and each has its matching lubricant. In a conventional (non-inverted) bearing, the spindle is fixed in the platter or sub-platter and descends into an oil-filled well in the plinth — gravity keeps the oil exactly where it belongs. That is precisely what Lube it is made for. In an inverted bearing, by contrast, the spindle points upwards and the bearing well sits upside down in the sub-platter. A thin oil would simply run out here; what is needed is a grease that stays put — Pro-Ject Grease it.

Lube it is therefore intended for models such as the Elemental, Primary, T-Line (T1/T2), Essential, Debut, The Classic, Juke Box and X1/X2. For the RPM series, the Xtension models and the Signature Line with their inverted bearings, please use Grease it instead. If in doubt, the manual — or a quick look underneath the removed platter — settles the question immediately: if the spindle points downwards, Lube it is the right choice.

Behind the product stands a manufacturer that has pursued analogue playback with single-minded consistency since 1991: Pro-Ject Audio Systems, a division of the Austrian Audio Tuning Vertriebs GmbH based in Mistelbach, is among the world's largest turntable makers and produces in Europe. The "it" accessory family — from Clean it and Wash it through to Lube it and Grease it — is the logical extension: workshop-grade solutions from the people who designed the decks in the first place.
