Amethyst - Reference MM cartridge - Sumiko
Amethyst - the reference class among MM systems
With the Amethyst, Sumiko takes the concept of the moving magnet cartridge to an exceptionally high level. Within the specially resonance-controlled housing of the current Oyster series (Moonstone, Olympia and Rainier), the output voltage has been deliberately lowered further. This design measure significantly reduces unwanted interference signals and creates the basis for an exceptionally clean, focused sound image.
At the heart of the Amethyst is a precisely manufactured, bare diamond with an elaborate line-contact cut. This needle shape allows extremely accurate groove scanning and reveals even the finest musical information that remains hidden from conventional cuts. Every modulation of the record groove, no matter how small, is reliably captured and implemented with impressive control and accuracy.
In terms of overall sonic performance, the Amethyst moves confidently in the territory of high-quality MC cartridges. It impresses with its remarkable smoothness, high definition and a transparency that effortlessly reveals even complex musical structures. Dynamic progressions are reproduced freely and effortlessly, sound colors appear deep, clear and authentic. The sound image is created against an almost silent background, with realistic spatial imaging, precise differentiation and a naturalness that is completely retained even in demanding passages.
Japanese craftsmanship without compromise
Every Sumiko pickup - from the classic Oyster to the top-of-the-range models - is carefully handcrafted in Yokohama, Japan. The proximity to the sea, which gave the company its name, is more than just symbolism: it stands for tradition, care and respect for detail.
Sumiko selects all materials primarily according to sound criteria and matches them perfectly to each other in elaborate listening and measuring procedures. Only when a design fully meets the high internal standards does series production begin. This is carried out by experienced specialists whose work is characterized by the highest precision, consistency and quality awareness.
The Amethyst is optimally matched to light to medium-weight tonearms. For lovers of historical sound carriers, it is also possible to equip the system with the Stylus RS78 and thus also play shellac records professionally.
