Explanation (S)electiv (L)aser (M)elting
Beam melting belongs to the group of generative manufacturing processes (also known as additive manufacturing or rapid prototyping). In these processes, the physical object is created by adding individual volume elements. The starting point for beam melting and all other additive manufacturing processes is a 3D CAD data set of the object to be produced. This data set is broken down into individual layers using special software, which have a thickness of between 20 and 100 µm during beam melting, depending on the requirements. In the beam melting system, metallic powder is then applied to a metallic building platform according to the set layer thickness. The layer geometry is then melted using a laser or electron beam. In the next step, the build platform is lowered by the corresponding layer thickness and new powder is applied to the previously melted and solidified layer. Now the next layer is melted, which simultaneously forms a bond with the previously melted layer. These processes are repeated until the last layer has been melted. In this way, a three-dimensional object is created layer by layer. The powder material is completely melted locally and then solidifies to form a 99.5 - 100 % dense structure. Series materials are processed during beam melting. These include various stainless and tool steels, aluminum and titanium alloys, cobalt-chromium alloys and high-temperature nickel-based alloys.
