Feelings, that indescribable realm that inspires poets and artists from so many different fields, are treasures that weigh on the soul. Mísia is aware of this. The artist, a dreamy fado singer, a singing actress, teller of her own stories and the stories of others, openly admits that she is an Animal Sentimental, a sentimental animal. The expression serves as the title of her new album, which signifies a new chapter in her career that has spanned three decades and brought her much international recognition.
Her career has now brought her to an ambitious new project led by Wolf-Dieter Karwatky, an award-winning producer and recording engineer who has worked with some of the biggest names in the classical music scene, winning Grammies and producing successful projects with Deutsche Grammophon during his 50-year career.
Karwatky recorded with Mísia and several experienced musicians at the storied Namouche Studios in Lisbon. Pianist Ricardo Días took over the musical direction and created the arrangements. Also participating in the recording were pianist Fabrizio Romano, guitarists Bernardo Couto (Portuguese guitar), Bruno Costa (Coimbra guitar) and Bernardo Viana (Fado guitar), as well as Luís Ferreirinha (viola) and bassist Daniel Pinto. Together they formed a carefully selected line-up that provides the instrumental underpinning for the new arrangements of songs to which Mísia had already lent her voice in the past. Some surprises are also included: "Qué he sacado con quererte" by Violeta Parra is one of them, as well as the song "De alguna Manera" from the pen of Luis Eduardo Aute, to which Mísia, although already sung in the past, breathes new life in the new version. "Fico a Cisma" is a composition by Rodrigo Leão that also falls into this exciting category, with Mísia's voice enchanting the listener.
And then there are the words, chosen with care by poets capable of expressing deep feelings. This time they include Tiago Torres da Silva and Fernando Pessoa, Mário Cláudio and Natália Correia, Vasco Graça Moura and Lídia Jorge, all of them gigangen of literature.
In each of the pieces, Mísia candidly shows her feelings and uses the songs as a mirror that reflects those feelings. In this way she shows her artistic attitude, which has always given her her own place in the fado scene. On the cover, this attitude is captured by the French painter Anne-Sophie Tschiegg, as only an artist can show the true face of another artist.
This album is part of an ambitious triptych: In addition to Animal Sentimental, Mísia plans to publish her stories and experiences in a book that she assures will be composed of poetic episodes, humorous and sentimental moments, and small tragedies of a lifelong journey that have been illustrated all the way back to her childhood and since 1991 on music albums with growing success and artistic ambitions. The third part will consist of concerts with which she will bring her stories, her songs, her feelings to the stage, the natural habitat of a sentimental animal.
