Kieran Hebden
What Kieran Hebden presents here single-handedly can be described as the state of the art of modern electronic music. The man must have an extremely well-founded musical education, because he jumps between styles and epochs with brashness and does not allow himself to be distracted by any convention in his search for his sound. Question: Is that allowed? Considering the size of this record, the clear answer is: If your name is Kieran Hebden, yes. If he wants to sound electronic, it sounds electronic. If you want it to sound natural, analog, nothing, absolutely nothing about the music seems to the listener not to have been produced on natural instruments.
I know of very, very few records on this planet that make it so easy for the listener to conjure up images, even entire films in widescreen Technicolor in his head. The effect of this record can be compared to drugs that have become vinyl, such as King Crimson's Islands (although musically they have nothing to do with each other). It has the meditative and melodic aspects of Keith Jarret's Köln Concerts, the virtuosity of some Coltrane passages.
The Domino label, on which the record was released, is one of the most innovative labels. one of the most innovative labels on the market. The musical range of this label is impressive.
Conclusion: Pictures, pictures, pictures. Well done. Beauty. No boredom. Innovations. Poetry. The soundtrack of the future in the now. Recommended tracks: My Baby Rocks Back And Forth and And They All Look Broken Hearted. And They All Look Broken Hearted features an iron-hard jazz beat, as free as a drumbeat can be. Continuous hi hats, but otherwise completely detached. Miles Davis would have loved this record. And at the end, Hebden gives us the beautiful Slow Jam and releases us into the night to look at the stars.
A dream record, already an all-time classic.
