Home is where the heart is. And Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen's heart has always beaten to the rhythm of swing. For this reason alone, this project with the KABA Orchestra, one of Europe's most exciting swing bands, was by no means "business as usual". Instead, the Norwegian singer threw herself with incredible passion into a personal selection from her rich catalog of songs. These are not just "new versions". In a way, they are the actual originals.
With "A Swing of its Own", Hilde Louise returns to her beginnings. To the time when she fell in love with jazz and listened to old records on her mother's record player. But nostalgia is far from her mind. Rather, the aim here is to revive the energy and magnetism of swing, which first swept the USA and then the rest of the world.
KABA and Hilde Louise have already met twice on stage on this joint mission: Once in 2016, at the Oslo Jazz Festival. And then in 2020, when they focused exclusively on the best pieces from Asbjørnsen's career. The latter is captured on this release, which "brings together all the inspirations from my decades as a songwriter and jazz vocalist".
Compared to earlier recordings, the arrangements on "A Swing of its Own" convey an almost cinematic expanse. However, Asbjørnsen remains true to the soul of her songs. This can be explained by the fact that all the musicians in her long-standing band also play with KABA - like a small energy cell within a larger organism.
Hilde Louise sums it up perfectly in her description of the beguiling title track: "I wrote it in 2016 for our collaboration with KABA at the time. It's an ode to the rhythm of the city, to the syncopated pulse that pumps blood through all our veins. On this album, she has found her perfect form and place."
Hilde Louise's career has taken her to distant shores and listeners can be grateful for that. But now she has finally arrived home. And all those who are ready to open themselves up to this music can look forward to following her there too.
