CLARK TERRY - Color Changes
Audiophile 180 gram reissue from Pure Pleasure
A cheerful and carefree jazz sound is synonymous with Clark Terry - he is always swinging, his music is exuberant and pure fun. The brilliant and unmistakable soloist gained his first experiences in the lively jazz scene in St. Louis in the early 1940s, where he was also a source of inspiration for Miles Davis. During the Second World War, he then played in a navy band and subsequently became known through engagements in Charlie Barnet's big band (1947/8), in Count Basie's orchestra and smaller bands (1948-1951) and especially through his collaboration with Duke Ellington (1951-59). The resulting performances and recordings (including "Perdido") are still fondly remembered, and it was during this time that the skilled swing/bop soloist Terry conducted his first recording sessions. Throughout the 1960s, recordings with Clark Terry appeared regularly, including the classic with the Oscar Peterson Trio (Oscar Peterson Trio + One) and several dates with the quintet he co-led with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer.
This is one of Clark Terry's best albums. Terry had complete control over the music, instead of the usual jam session he used an octet and arrangements by Yusef Lateef, Budd Johnson and Al Cohn. The band members match their potential and the compositions make good use of the skills of these individual stylists. The repertoire, consisting of compositions by Terry, Duke Jordan, Yusef Lateef and Bob Wilber, is both unusual and refreshing - and the interpretations always swing.
