COLEMAN ORNETTE QUARTET - This Is Our Music (180g/45rpm)
Audiophile 180 gram reissue as 45 rpm edition from ORG Music.
"9.4 points out of 10 Pitchfork"
The inventor of what has come to be called 'free jazz', Ornette Coleman, belongs to that rare breed of artist/thinker whose influence extends far beyond the realm of their chosen medium. Always putting his remarkable virtuosity in the service of melody and feeling, he has had a powerful influence on how musicians play, improvise and compose, on how music lovers listen, and on the color and sound of music around the world.
In the late 1950s, at a time when he was making a living as an elevator operator in Los Angeles, he formed the Ornette Coleman Quintet, with a core of musicians who were to play a major role in his life: a tall teenager, trumpeter Don Cherry, and a cherubic double bass player with a thoughtful style, Charlie Haden, who found in Ornette his dream accomplice. Drummers Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell also became integral parts of the intensely experimental group.
Coleman remembers his early comrades-in-arms with warmth: "I was writing new music all the time, usually for each of our gigs, and they played along as if they had played nothing else all their lives. Both as a community and as individuals, we found a relationship with our shared humanity and artistry that was really very special."
"This Is Our Music" came out in 1960 on Atlantic Records, Coleman's third release with the label and his fifth overall. This landmark set of seven tracks is his first with drummer Ed Blackwell in place of Billy Higgins, and is also significant because it is Coleman's only Atlantic release with a track not written by himself, the well-known "Embraceable You" by Gershwin. The rest of the program consists of creative Coleman compositions that give the piano-less quartet room to show off their immense improvisational talents, capped by pieces like "Blues Connotation," "Beauty Is A Rare Thing" and "Kaleidoscope."
This important edition from ORG Music has been remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog tapes at 45 rpm, pressed at Pallas in Germany on two LPs of 180g vinyl of audiophile quality, and is housed in an old-school fold-out Stoughton gatefold cover.
