MORRIS RAMON - Sweet Sister Funk (180g)
From the mid to late 1960s, producer Sonny Lester set the tone for some of the most important jazz formations of the time (Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Chick Corea, Duke Ellington's 70th birthday concert) as well as some of the genre's biggest hits, often by organist Jimmy McGriff. With the winding up of the Solid State label in 1971, Sonny Lester founded the aptly named Groove Merchant label, named after a composition written by Jerome Richardson for the Jones-Lewis Orchestra. He went on to produce some of the most remarkable soul/jazz and jazz/fusion tracks by McGriff, Richard Groove Holmes, Reuben Wilson, Lonnie Smith, to name but a few.
This brilliant album by Ramon Morris, is considered one of the hardest to find and most sought after in the Groove Merchant catalog, probably because this record is one funk bomb after another. Recorded during what many consider the classic period of this jazz/funk/soul/fusion era - shortly after he appeared with Art Blakey as one of the Jazz Messengers on the '72 Prestige album "Child's Cance" along with Stanley Clarke and Woody Shaw. After that he also played on the Woody Shaw album, also from 1972, "Song Of Songs".
Today, Ramon Morris teaches at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittburgh, Pa.
