MANN HERBIE - At The Village Gate (180g)
"Comin' Home Baby" - that's how the LP begins and catapulted it into the charts. It may not have reached the top spot, but from then on Herbie Mann was one of the superstars of the Atlantic jazz stable. He called himself or was called 'Our man with the flute' and the critics of the early 60s were full of praise. He became even more famous and probably also rich through soundtracks and later sometimes quite commercial productions. He was granted it.
In this live recording from the Village Gate, 'The Mann' delivers jazz of the purest water, no wonder with a rhythm section of the caliber of Ahmad Abdul-Malik and Rudy Collins. The composer of "Comin' Home Baby" Ben Tucker then appears as a guest before the two Gershwin compositions from "Porgy And Bess" offer plenty of space for pure rhythm.
Willis Conover, part-time spokesman for the Newport Jazz Festival - older jazz fans will remember his baritone voice from AFN broadcasts - describes the ethnic backgrounds of all the musicians, which range from Romania to Puerto Rico, in detail in the cover text. However, the three tracks are not at all commonplace music, but rather a mouth-watering flute cocktail.
This genuine rarity from the Atlantic collection of the early sixties has long been on the wish list of many fans; now it is finally available again.
This Speakers Corner production was made using analog master tape and mastering 100% pure analog. More information at www.pure-analogue.com. All licenses and GEMA fees have been paid.
We recommend the use of "L'Art du Son" LP cleaner for wet cleaning your vinyl. New records from high-quality production will also benefit from this.
