The band "Olive Grove" combines contemporary songwriting and contemporary grooves with the improvisations of jazz. The structure and melody of the songs find their origin in the classic song structures of the Great American Songbook. Loosened up by modal solo parts and vamps, different sound worlds and playing concepts are brought together.
"At a family dinner once my little niece marveled at a jar of olives and then said rather dryly: "the uncle is an olive with an r!"
This sober statement remained in my memory and at some point gave me the impetus to launch a future band project with an olive pun. Olive Grove is not only obvious, but also very fitting. In a garden / grove there are usually friends, soulmates, allies, people with whom you like to spend time, create ideas together, play, eat well and let your soul dangle.
I had decided to try out a completely new constellation with young musicians. I had already been working with Franziska for a while, she had thankfully written lyrics for some songs, we had gone into the first rehearsals well prepared. Raphael and Lukas are two "Brothers in Crime" who bring a great understanding of playing into the band due to their many years of collaboration.
To cut a long story short: it was possible to go into the studio and record this album after only six rehearsals, and on top of that we weren't complete at some of the rehearsals. The chemistry in the band fits, also because all participants act sensitively, openly and professionally. Just as prudent and respectful as pleasant contemporaries in an imaginary olive grove. Two of my best friends and companions I could win for guest contributions: Lorenz Raab and Niko Afentulidis" (Oliver Steger).
