Was Lalo Schifrin supposed to...? We don't know whether Mr. Schifrin was nibbling from the chemistry set back then, but this record is certainly psychedelic enough. And in Schifrin's own highly stylish style.
This record occupies a special place in Lalo Schifrin's busy oeuvre. In the album title, the Brazilian bossa icon promises to show the whole of Schifrin as he strolls off the broad Latin paths, but not without pouring fresh water on the clicking rhythm mills of his homeland. The very first track, "Secret Code Synthesizer", is full of experimentation: this is probably the first attempt to create two and a half minutes of music from electronically generated flute tones and the clicking sounds of Indian tabla drums. A calm trumpet ballad ("Dissolving") and pensive, questioning group dreams ("How To Open ...") are then added as if to recover. And there's also a crisp, danceable bossa ("Two Petals") with a natural guitar base.
Humor brings health, says Schifrin, and lets baroque fanfares and rock tirades collide ("Hawks vs. Doves") to such an extent that it just grates. And that's probably how it should be, because it becomes clear that the stylistic opponents of two eras are equal in their power. In "Vaccinated Mushrooms", Schifrin proves that his musical parodying skills are not inferior to those of Frank Zappa. After all, anyone who can make the honky-tonk piano sway with such a provocative, glassy-eyed vision must really have a sense of humor.
