LATEEF YUSEF - The Doctor Is In ... And Out (180g)
As one of the most restless of the spiritual seekers in music, Yusef Lateef revisited some of his earliest themes in 1976, this time in the context of modern sound structures: the Eastern characteristic and melodic reference systems from his time at Prestige, such as "Eastern Sounds", "Cry!/Tender" and "Other Sounds", this time applied in a much more sophisticated, complex and calibrated way - after all, more than twenty years had passed since then. Funk and soul provide the groove here. In every era, funk has changed, which is why in 1976 Lateef's insertions at the crossroads between all the ports of his previous musical journey were not only permissible, but also necessary.
For this recording, he used an enormous group of musicians, sometimes for this part, sometimes for that part, or to achieve a particular sound or a special introduction. The participants included Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Dom Um Romao, Al Foster, Billy Butler, Anthony Jackson, a five-piece brass section and a synthesizer player. As always, Lateef's compositions offered moving insights into geographical, psychological, spiritual and emotional terrain, but in unpredictable ways.
There's a deep, minor-key meditation on blues and evolving thematic variations in "Hellbound" that become a Latin funk melody; then the light, contemplative and stripped-down "Mystique," which uses a repetitive rhythmic phrase but explores every inch of its seam through a string ensemble and Lateef's flute solo; the even, urban, bluesy funk of "Mississippi Mud"; and the completely old-fashioned electronic music style of "Technological Homosapiens", which becomes a series of synthesizer squeals with an unpredictable bass accompaniment; plus the wonderfully distorted mariachi variation (sung in the language of white Americans), where the band plays bluesy hard bop to an ancient recording of "In A Little Spanish Town". A strange choice for the last track on an LP, but then again, it's a record as strange as it is wonderful.
