The album Lieblingsfarben und Tiere by the German band Element of Crime was released in 2014 and is an impressive work that presents the poetic depth and musical warmth of the band in its most mature form. With this album, Sven Regener and his bandmates prove once again that they are masters of emotive storytelling and melancholic melodies. It is a work that offers both intimacy and escape from everyday life - a musical stroll through the small and big emotions of life.
Element of Crime remain true to their characteristic sound, a mixture of chanson, folk, rock and a pinch of jazz. On Lieblingsfarben und Tiere, however, they sound even more relaxed and atmospheric than before. The tempo is mostly leisurely, the instrumentation delicate and unagitated, but full of rich detail: trumpet sounds, gentle guitar riffs, floating organs and subtle percussion create a soundscape reminiscent of rainy autumn afternoons or balmy summer nights.
As usual, Sven Regener's lyrics are poetic, often intricate and full of subtle observations about life, love and transience. The combination of his rough, distinctive voice and the warm, melancholy instrumentation creates an incomparable emotional depth.
