"80ies music", says the label information about this record. "Wow," we say, "what superficiality!" Well, Thomas Dolby's music is certainly rooted in the eighties. This is largely due to his synth sounds, but also to his compositions and his understanding of music. In all these aspects, Dolby shows a wealth of knowledge and stylistic confidence.
I hate this silly eighties revival stuff and the associated synthy dudgeon. The Forty has nothing in common with either. Some of the compositions are reminiscent of those of Mr. Becker / Mr. Fagen, the musical and technical level is high, the joy of playing is great (the album was recorded live), the production and the sound of the album are right up there.
Ergo: a great piece that we recommend buying and do so with a clear conscience!
