"I'm tired of singing my song in Las Vegas". The title, almost casually interspersed on the second side, perhaps gave sentimental spirits a hint that the Everly Brothers' song glory would not last forever. In 1973, one year after the production of "Stories We Could Tell", it happened: Tired of exhausting gigs and groupies and the evergreen oldies, the brothers took a break from their art that was to last ten years.
This also explains why the country rockers reached less into their own box of songs for this album than into the pool of famous colleagues such as Jesse Winchester, Kris Kristofferson and Rod Stewart. The producers also made a big splash for the successful release and engaged a number of the best musicians, such as John Sebastian (harmonica) and Ry Cooder (guitar), who were available on the American West Coast in the early 70s. Needless to say, the 'Brothers' once again gave everything they had learned in 25 years of stage experience. Anyone who is now thinking of the sometimes somewhat staid crooning of the youthful Everlys can rest assured. These 'Stories' are grown-up and they sound just as grown-up.
