Vinyl Care · Record Brush
Dust is the natural enemy of every vinyl record. Whatever settles between the grooves shows up audibly — as crackles, faint hiss, or lost fine detail — and over time damages both the record and the stylus. The MFSL Record Brush by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab has long been regarded as the definitive answer to this everyday problem: a modern, uncompromisingly engineered pad brush that has become the contemporary evolution of the classic carbon-fibre brush — and for many collectors, the benchmark in gentle, effective record care.
The decisive difference compared to a carbon-fibre brush lies in the working principle: while carbon fibres mainly redistribute dust and only loosely lift particles, the proprietary fibre pad of the MFSL reaches deep into the groove and physically picks up debris instead of pushing it around. A single, calm rotation of the record is generally enough to thoroughly remove dust. The reason: the brush surface is dimensioned to match the recorded area of an LP — the entire groove zone is covered in one pass, with no need to reposition, no pressure, no risk.

Cleaning surface matches the recorded area — one rotation does the job
Use could hardly be simpler: place the brush flat onto the rotating record, no pressure — its own weight is sufficient — and wait for one calm rotation. Then carefully lift the brush off at the outer edge of the record so the collected dust travels with it and does not fall back into the groove. The ergonomic handle allows a relaxed, even contact and removes any risk of the brush slipping during the motion.
Professionals and audiophile collectors work with two MFSL brushes in parallel — for a very practical reason. One brush stays dry and is used exclusively for removing dust and coarse debris before each playback. The second is reserved for wet cleaning and is used to apply cleaning fluids such as L'Art Du Son or distilled water — for example as part of a manual washing routine or as the application tool for record cleaning machines. This separation reliably prevents cleaning residue from being transferred onto records that should only be dry-cleaned — a detail that, in practice, makes the difference between superficial and genuinely thorough cleaning.
With its generous cleaning surface of approximately 8.9 × 5.2 cm, the brush also works exceptionally well as an applicator for cleaning machines — distributing fluids evenly across the entire groove zone without the need for repositioning. Before first use, the manufacturer recommends rinsing the pad briefly with pure water to remove any loose fibres remaining from the cutting process.
Probably the most practical detail of the MFSL Brush is its replaceable pad system: when the fibre surface visibly wears out after intensive use — or can no longer be revived through routine cleaning with distilled water and a toothbrush — the pad can simply be peeled off and replaced. The original pads come with a pre-applied adhesive layer protected by wax paper. Carefully peel off the used pad along with any adhesive residue, align the new pad centrally and press it down evenly. Important: to allow the adhesive to set fully, the brush should rest for around 24 hours before being used again for wet cleaning.
Mobile Fidelity quotes a service life of approximately 100 to 150 cleaned LPs per pad as a guideline — a realistic figure that is often exceeded with careful handling. This makes the brush not only durable but consistently sustainable: instead of discarding the entire brush body, only the wear part is replaced. The OEM replacement pads are available separately and known for their attractive pricing — a thoughtful solution for active vinyl collectors who regularly maintain larger record libraries.
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab
Few names enjoy as undisputed a reputation in the vinyl world as Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. Founded in 1977, the U.S. company has been known for decades for its audiophile Original Master Recordings (OMR) — reissues of iconic albums in the highest possible mastering quality, half-speed mastered and pressed on heavy vinyl. Anyone with an MFSL pressing on the shelf knows: this is vinyl produced with an understanding of detail and sonic fidelity that sets standards.
That the same workshop also produces the accessories with which to best care for those very records is no coincidence — it is a logical step. The MFSL Record Brush has been the absolute bestseller of the brand's care range for years and was honoured with the Editors' Choice Award by The Absolute Sound. An accessible, thoughtfully designed tool — and a piece of audiophile culture that should not be missing from any serious record collection.
