ALMENARES ALEJANDRO - Casa De Trova - Cuba 50's (2LP/180g)
La Casa de Trova. The house of the troubadours. A place of almost mystical status in Cuban music, home to so many great songs that originated on this island - even Paul McCartney made a pilgrimage there. For Alejandro Almenares, it's a place he visits every day with his guitar to play and chat with friends. It is also the inspiration behind this album "Casa De Trova".
For Almenares, there is still a deep connection to this house today. His father, musician Angel Sanchez Almenares, was one of the founders of the Casa. "I was there when it all started," he recalls. "I grew up hearing them all play here all the time, the trovas and the soneros. Now I'm 76, I'm the last of the founders still alive."
This is a house filled with memories of all the melodies that have filled the air over the years - and continue to do so to this day. As a child, Almenares sucked them in like the air he breathed. When he was ten years old, he began attending music school until he was fourteen, "when I had to stop to work and help my parents."
Two years later, he was a professional musician; he played the music his father had composed and performed with bands such as Los Taínos, Trio Oriente and Las Guitarras Internacionales. A life full of music and, he adds with a smile, "with so many bands that their names and numbers have now slipped my mind."
If you're a fan of the Buena Vista Social Club - this man makes them look like a posse. Composer, singer and tres guitarist that he is, Alejandro Almenares offers us the original Cuba on this set. The double LP contains the same songs (albeit in a different order); the difference is that the first lets us hear his rich, full-throated voice, while the second features his pieces (mainly) as instrumental music. Flutes, percussion, violin, soprano saxophone, guitars and interspersed sung choruses accompany Almenares on the soft and fragrant instrumentals of "No Critiques Al Nene" and "La Nina Que Yo Ame", while vocalists Tony Rodon, Eva Grinan, Jose Cabrera and Ismael Borges respectively tell us tales of passion with "Mujercita Linda", A Tu Retrato", "Te Vi Y Te Contemple" and "De Lo Que Quiero Saber". The simplicity of the magic of the old world is lavishly spread out here. No tricks, no embellishments, just seriousness and, just like the best chefs, the simple ingredients are left to create the flavors that make your mouth water. Listening is absolutely essential!
