VAUGHAN STEVIE RAY - Texas Flood (2LP/180g)
The impact of Stevie Ray Vaughan's debut LP "Texas Flood" at the time of its release in 1983 cannot be overestimated. At that time, the blues was nowhere near as important as it had been in the 60s - "Texas Flood" changed that fundamentally, reaching the Top 40 in the charts and staying there for more than half a year, unheard of for a blues LP. Vaughan became a real star and ignited the revival of the blues. The impact was nothing short of monumental, yet Vaughan, despite his astonishing skill on the guitar, was criticized for his lacklustre voice. Instead, critics said, the influences were all too apparent, be it Albert King's bruised yet powerful soloing or Larry Davis' emotive vocals. There is a grain of truth in these accusations, but that was precisely what gave "Texas Flood" its significance. Vaughn made no attempt to hide his influences, he celebrated them, pumping fresh blood into a familiar genre.
When Vaughan and his band Double Trouble recorded this album over a three-day period in 1982, the individual tracks had already been played at countless live performances, he knew exactly how to treat his material for maximum impact. The album is structured like a live performance, starting with the two best self-penned songs, "Love Struck Baby" and "Pride and Joy", then leading into two cover versions, the low simmering title track and an exciting rendition of Howlin' Wolf's "Tell Me", before climaxing with "Dirty Pool" and "I'm Crying". As a crowning finale, Vaughan pays a lyrical-jazzy tribute to his wife with "Lenny".
It becomes clear that Vaughan's real achievement - by adopting various influences from his idols - was finding something personal and emotive. Sometimes the borrowings were obvious, sometimes only subtle, the fusion of memories of the past with the excitement and essence of the present are Stevie Ray Vaughan's style.
We recommend the use of "L'Art du Son" LP cleaner for wet washing your vinyl. Even new records from high-quality production will benefit from this once again.
