ALAN PARSONS PROJECT - Eye In The Sky (180g)
The Alan Parsons Project demonstrated how one can rise to stardom without resorting to the typical celebrity cult of the music industry—even without elaborate light shows, big-name rock stars in the band to boost sales, or self-penned songs. Parsons, who initially completed an apprenticeship as a sound engineer at EMI and later oversaw several Paul McCartney productions and the creation of Pink Floyd’s album *Dark Side of the Moon* at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, leveraged his home-field advantage for his solo career. While his co-producer Eric Woolfson served as the songwriter, Parsons, with his phenomenal sense of sound, concocted rich blends of synthetic and natural sonic ingredients.
Like all of his early albums, “Eye in the Sky” also addresses important themes of the times. Reflecting the “no future” lifestyle of the 1980s, the songs exude slightly depressive tones, which serve as a contrast to steely rock rhythms, free of electronic gimmicks. This is complemented by harmony-driven vocal harmonies (“Gemini”), orchestral brass fanfares in a Spanish rhythm (“Silence And I”), and velvety clouds of strings (“Old And Wise”). A powerful performance by the British sound aesthete at the mixing console.
