DVORAK / BRUCH - Cello Concerto / Kol Nidrei (180g)
The outstanding success of our recording of Bach’s Cello Suites, performed by Janos Starker, encourages us to present another, no less significant recording by the Hungarian virtuoso: Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. Starker tackles this concerto with a striking confidence that seems to know no technical difficulties. The purity of the tones remains unblemished even in the dreaded high registers and in the cadenzas, allowing the listener to surrender completely to the meditative magic of the music.
In Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra, Starker has found worthy collaborators. The conductor and soloist set new standards for concert collaboration by placing less emphasis on the much-vaunted competition in their interpretation. Rather, the protagonists commit to a chamber-music-style interpretation characterized by the orchestra’s dynamically restrained playing and the solo part’s consistently refined tone.
As an always welcome encore, the second side features Bruch’s “Kol Nidrei,” performed with verve, power, and a healthy dose of that romantic mellowness that allows the piece to blossom into an evergreen.
