EARTH, WIND & FIRE - Thats The Way Of The World (180g)
Okay, disco sound, but well done." Anyone who talks like that today must have been quick on their feet in the 70s and 80s and sensed down to the tips of their toes at a young age that there was plenty of tingling substance in the commercial fusion music of their Saturday-night sizzles. What's more. Earth, Wind & Fire even attributed existential significance to the highly layered casserole of Latin, gospel, soul, funk and crisp brass sections: this album was to be a landmark in determining whether the band could establish itself or would sink into the nameless monotony of the countless rhythm & blues acts.
The basic recipe of fine Latin beats, pithy bass grooves and crisp funk improvisations, spiced up with exotic sound ingredients, was just right. Crowned with airy falsetto and relaxed harmony vocals, the band formed a condensed big band sound that the specialist magazine Rolling Stone described as innovative but popular, precise yet sensual, calculated yet captivating. After almost two decades and more than three million copies sold in the USA alone, the editors decided to include the record in their list of the 500 best albums of all time. It's about time, because now ravers and rappers also get a fair chance to experience the danceable rhythm of Papa.
